FIFA Under-20 World Cup: Preview and TV schedule for Wednesday's semifinals Posted: 10 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT Iraq vs. UruguayAfter Uruguay put Spain out in the quarter-finals, they will be hotly-tipped to go all the way having knocked out the favourites. The prospect of Iraq may not sound too daunting, and they'll certainly be devastated should they fail to make the finals. For Iraq, however, the chance to continue their run will provide plenty of motivation. Match Date/Time: 7 p.m. UTC, 2 p.m. ET Venue: Huseyin Avni Aker Stadium, Trabzon, Turkey TV: Eurosport 2 (U.K.), Eurosport 2 International
France vs. GhanaFrance are perhaps the favourites of the tournament following Spain's exit, but they have a trickier test to make the final than their most dangerous opponents Uruguay, being drawn against a tough Ghana team. With their opponents having put Portugal to the sword, there will be plenty of warning for the French. Match Date/Time: 4 p.m. UTC, 2 p.m. ET Venue: Ataturk Stadium, Bursa, Turkey TV: Eurosport 2 (U.K.), Eurosport 2 International |
USA vs. Belize: Final score 6-1, Put back a six-pack for America Posted: 09 Jul 2013 10:34 PM PDT One, two, three, four, five, six. The goals kept coming for the United States and there was nothing Belize could do about it. Chris Wondolowski notched a first half hat trick and Landon Donovan scored a goal to go along with two assists as the the U.S. crushed Belize 6-1 to start their Gold Cup off as planned.
Wondolowski took the field with "Wondowlowski" on the back of his shirt and gave the kit man plenty of opportunities to wallow in his mistakes as he put three goals past Belize before the break to highlight the misspelling for all the world to see. His first goal came after just 12 minutes, with goals in the 37th and 41st minutes to follow. None of the goals were especially mind-blowing, but they were an exhibition in the striker's ability to find holes in defenses and make smart runs as he scored three from in close.
Belize did have one highlight as they scored in the 40th minute. Ian Gaynair managed to find himself completely unmarked on a free kick and nodded home with ease. The second half was more of the same for the U.S. They possessed the ball with ease and were never under duress. They weren't at their best, appropriately looking the part of a bored and unchallenged team, but when the opportunity to presented itself they still punished Belize. Stuart Holden scored his first international goal in four years as he continued his comeback from several knee injuries just before the hour mark. Joe Corona's cross from the right found Donovan at the back post, who nodded the ball down for an onrushing Holden to finish. Michael Orozco got in on the action with a goal of his own as he made his return to the national tea and Donovan got on the scoreboard himself when he buried a spot kick after a harsh penalty call against poor Belize. It all proved to be a walk in the park for the U.S., as was expected, but Belize stated before the tournament that one of their goals was to score a goal. Mission accomplished, for Belize and the U.S. Follow @SBNationSoccer on Twitter | Like SB Nation Soccer on Facebook More in Soccer:• Fiorentina ready to challenge for the Scudetto • Christian Benteke hands in transfer request |
Costa Rica vs. Cuba: Final score 3-0, Ticos roll to easy win Posted: 09 Jul 2013 09:52 PM PDT Costa Rica wasn't especially good in their Gold Cup opener, but they didn't have to be. As sloppy as they were in front of goal and in the midfield, Cuba could never make them pay because as poor as the Ticos were, the Cubans were five times worse. So in the end, when Costa Rica walked away with a 3-0 win, it wasn't so much worth celebrating for the Ticos as it was three points earned and a match needing to be forgotten. The first half was a series of Costa Rica misses, be it on passes or shots, and a energetic, but disorganized Cuba team doing their best to pressure. Unsurprisingly, that combination led to an awful opening 45 minutes and halftime was welcomed by the dozens of fans in attendance and thousands of empty seats waiting to be filled by Americans for the second match of the doubleheader. Michael Barrantes finally gave the match just after the break when he notched his first goal of the match. It broke Cuba and put them on cruise control to a win, no matter how sloppy it was. Jairo Arrieta doubled their lead in the 71st minute and Barrantes added another in the 77th minute to cap the match. With the win, Costa Rica jumped to the top of Group C with three points, although the United States is expected to join them after their tournament opener vs. Belize. Cuba is in a tough spot, having allowed three goals, which hurts their chances of qualifying as one of the best third place teams. Kyle Busch dominates return to Super Late Model racing, wins Howie Lettow Memorial 150 Posted: 09 Jul 2013 09:24 PM PDT Kyle Busch swept the Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 150 on Tuesday night, leading every practice session and ultimately winning the race from the pole (overcoming an invert) at the legendary Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisc. Busch started the race from 14th following the invert and quickly sliced through the field, leading by lap 11. This was hardly a surprise after time trials where Busch turned a fast lap that was 3/8th quicker than the one turned by second-quickest John Hunter Nemechek. Busch took the top spot from Boris Jurkovic and never looked back, leading until lap 115 when the race was called for darkness. The Milwaukee Mile does not have permanent lighting and temporary lights were erected for previous twilight events at the Speedway. Following a completely masterful performance, Busch gave all the credit to his team at Kyle Busch Motorsports. "This win came from the shop for sure," Busch said. "This race probably came together two-or-three months ago when we first put the sponsorship together with Monster Energy and support from the local Budweiser distributor. "We wanted to run this race last year but things just didn't pan out. We actually had a lot of work to do because this was actually a wrecked car that we had sitting in the shop from two years ago that we had to put back together. It took a little bit to do that but it turned out pretty good." Defending winner Travis Sauter and Uncle Johnny Sauter might have had the best chance to chase down the Sprint Cup Series ace but simply ran out of daylight and finished second and third respectively. As it turns out, there wasn't a whole lot different between Travis' dominating performance in last year's race and this year except for the fact that Busch showed up and was even faster. "We weren't good in the first half and these guys were just passing me left and right," Travis Sauter said. "I was just hanging on at this point. We made some adjustments and got better but Kyle was just in his own league." Jacob Goede and Chris Wimmer rounded out the top-five. The race was delayed (under caution) for about 20 minutes in the first half when James Swan, Mason Mingus, Erik Darnell and Brandon Hermiller tangled off the exit of turn four. Swan slammed into the orange barriers at the entrance of pit road, completely destroying his car and further delaying the race due to the damage to the track. The barriers had to be replaced before the race could resume and that may have made the difference in running the race to conclusion. Matt Kenseth was expected to contend for the win but brought out the first caution on lap 15 when his engine expired on the backstretch. He would finish 41st and join his son, Ross' pit crew for the remainder of the race. The younger Kenseth finished 24th. NBA free agency 2013: Greg Stiemsma drawing interest from 12 teams, according to report Posted: 09 Jul 2013 08:53 PM PDT Free agent center Greg Stiemsma is drawing interest from as many as 12 teams, according to Sam Amick of USA Today. Stiemsma was waived earlier this offseason by the Timberwolves after just one season in Minnesota. It is unclear which teams are currently pursuing him, although Amick did list the New Orleans Pelicans as one of his potential suitors. Stiemsma, 27, played overseas after not being drafted out of the University of Wisconsin. He spent a year in Turkey and South Korea before returning to the United States to play in the D-League. After failing to stick with an NBA franchise, he returned to Turkey in 2010-11. He finally made his NBA debut in 2011 with the Celtics. He spent last season with the Timberwolves, averaging 4.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while playing about 16 minutes a night. The report of 12 teams showing interest in Stiemsma is not a surprise. He's regarded as a solid defender and shot blocker around the rim, and given that he is still relatively young and will not command a large contract, teams will waste no time calling his agent. Alex Rios records 6 hits vs. Tigers Posted: 09 Jul 2013 08:15 PM PDT White Sox outfielder Alex Rios had six hits Tuesday night against the Tigers, which made him the fifth player in franchise history to have as many in a nine inning game (per Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago). Rios also tied the AL record for most hits in a nine inning game, becoming the 32nd player since 1916 to accomplish the feat (per Dave Hogg of Fox Sports Detroit). Even more impressive, Rios recorded four of the six hits off Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who had never allowed four hits to a batter in a single game. Milwaukee's Jean Segura was the only other hitter in the major leagues this year to have six hits in a game, as he went 6-for-7 on May 28. Five of Rios' hits were singles, with the other being a triple off Verlander. For Rios, who is batting just .267 this season, this outburst certainly comes as a bit of a surprise. The White Sox, who have struggled greatly this season, ended the game with 23 hits combined as a team, so Rios was not the only surprise tonight.
