RBC Canadian Open 2013 odds: Brandt Snedeker leads American trio of favorites Posted: 25 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT The week after a golf major is always a bit of a letdown, but the PGA Tour makes its annual stop north of the border this week for the RBC Canadian Open. Given the short turnaround between the British Open and the PGA Championship, it's the one marquee event on the calendar for the Tour (with the WGC taking over next week). Even with its sub-optimal date, the Canadian Open has still drawn a strong field this week, including Open contenders Hunter Mahan, Dustin Johnson, and Brandt Snedeker. Snedeker starts the week as the favorite with 12/1 odds. He certainly had an entertaining journey in Scotland, going on birdie streaks, four-putting during one of the ugliest stretches of his career, and creating a new dance move: Right behind Snedeker are fellow Americans Hunter Mahan and Matt Kuchar, two players who've been consistently at the top of leaderboards all summer. For the second straight major, Mahan played in the final group on Sunday, and for the second time, he was not much of a factor down the stretch. He's one of the best players in the world, but has not won since last year's Houston Open, despite several close calls, including at the WGC Match Play, where he lost to Kuchar in the finals. Both players begin the week at 18/1. There are 18 Canadians in the field, and the player with the best shot is Graham DeLaet. A Canadian has not won this event in 59 years, even the decorated Mike Weir. DeLaet is the best candidate in several years to have a shot to end that drought for the Canucks, as he's put together one of the best seasons on Tour. In 20 events, he's missed only three cuts and finished inside the top 25 a total of 10 times. He begins the week at 28/1 and should be a factor come Sunday at Glen Abbey. Here are the full pre-tourney odds from Bovada:

Mexico vs. Panama: Final score 1-2, Canaleros beat El Tri again to book final spot Posted: 24 Jul 2013 09:15 PM PDT Panama is on their way to the Gold Cup final. The Canaleros registered their second 2-1 win over Mexico in the 2013 Gold Cup, this time in the semifinals thanks to goals by Blas Perez and Roman Torres. Now they will meet the United States on Sunday in Chicago, where the CONCACAF championship will be on the line. But while Panama celebrates, Mexico plummets back into disarray. Not only did they fall short of the final, but they cannot even argue that they put up a good fight, having been fairly beaten by Panama twice to finish rightly outside of the top two. With this elimination, along with Mexico's struggles in World Cup qualification and the Confederations Cup, the embattled Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre may not be at the helm of El Tri for much longer. Perez put Panama in front after just 13 minutes when a bad Mexico giveaway gave the Canaleros a chance to get forward. The ball found Perez on the right, who, despite a sharp angle, ripped a shot past Jonathan Orozco to quiet the green-clad crowd over more than 80,000 at Cowboys Stadium. Mexico got back in the match before the half-hour mark when Luis Montes got on the end of a wonderful Marco Fabian cross and after leveling, they began to find their feet. Their awful start, which saw Panama boss them for the first 20 minutes, was gone and instead they began to attack with pace and conviction, but it didn't result in anything more than an equalizer. The rest of their chances went begging and after 15 minutes, the hesitation that plagued them throughout the tournament returned. The second half went much like the first. Both teams had chances, but Panama showed more organization and composure, while Mexico struggled to pull things together. Even when El Tri had chances, it was the result of great individual play. All the while, the Canaleros maintained their shape and continued to lean upon their physicality. That paid off in the 61st minute when Torres easily got away from Joel Huiqui on a corner kick and headed home what would prove to be the match-winner. Mexico did their best to equalize, but all their crosses into the box either found the heads of the resolute Panamanians or were cleared away not long after a Mexican got a touch to it. They couldn't find a way through, and when the final whistle went, they couldn't do anything but slump to the ground. Panama stormed the field, celebrating in front of a stunned stadium. They had bested Mexico for a second time and their Gold Cup dream remains alive. Next up, the United States and the final, where they can win their first ever Gold Cup. NASCAR Eldora 2013: Austin Dillon holds off Kyle Larson to win NASCAR's return to dirt Posted: 24 Jul 2013 09:01 PM PDT Austin Dillon returned to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series the same night NASCAR retuned to dirt, and everyone was a winner.
Racing in the series for the first time since winning the 2011 championship, Dillon pulled away during a green-white-checkered-flag finish to win Wednesday night's CarCash Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway, the first dirt-track race in any of NASCAR's top three series since Richard Petty won at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh on Sept. 30, 1970.
Before an enthusiastic packed house at the half-mile dirt track owned by three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, Dillon held off Kyle Larson to claim his fifth NCWTS win. Ryan Newman ran third behind Dillon and Larson, followed by Joey Coulter and Brendan Gaughan.
Using his dirt track experience to work his way through traffic, Larson charged from his 13th-place starting position to the lead during the first 60-lap segment of the race. On Lap 39, Larson passed Timothy Peters for the top spot and pulled away to a lead of more than three seconds.
On Lap 54, NASCAR called a caution after debris from Scott Bloomquist's Toyota landed in the racing groove, and that yellow carried over through the end of the first segment.
Larson led the field to green to start the second segment of 50 laps, but on Lap 89 Austin Dillon grabbed the top spot in heavy traffic. The segment ended with Larson in hot pursuit of Dillon but unable to complete the pass.
After pit stops, Dillon and Larson took the green side by side to commence the final 40 laps.
Though a series of five heat races determined the starting order for the main event, Ken Schrader, 58, earned the distinction as the pole winner during time trials that preceded the heats. Benefiting from an early draw, Schrader covered the half-mile distance in 19.709 seconds (91.329 mph) to become the oldest pole winner in any of NASCAR's top three touring series.
That distinction had belonged to Dick Trickle, who in 1999 won a NASCAR Nationwide Series pole at Dover at age 57.
Schrader won the first heat race from the pole, holding off fast-closing J.R. Heffner, to lock himself into the top starting position for the 150-lap main event. The NASCAR veteran clearly was excited about his effort after the first heat race.
"There's been more hype for this race -- I'm thinking back -- since the inaugural Brickyard 400 (in 1994)," Schrader said.
Schrader edged dirt track ace Jared Landers (90.891 mph) for the top spot in time trials. Landers, who was driving a NASCAR Camping World Truck for the first time, is the current Eldora track record holder in Dirt Late Models, having turned a lap in 14.922 seconds in that classification.
Most emblematic of the occasion, however, wasn't Schrader starting up front. It was 61-year-old Norm Benning taking the green from the back of the field -- and the fight he put up for the privilege of doing so.
Slamming and banging with Clay Greenfield in the final three laps of the last-chance heat, Benning refused to give up the fifth and final transfer spot into the main event. Drivers who already were locked into the race stood and cheered as Benning and Greenfield pounded each other through the final corner, with Benning prevailing.
Afterwards, crew members and fellow drivers alike congratulated the veteran racer. Yes, Benning had just finished fifth in a last-chance qualifier, but the way he did it captured the mood at NASCAR's first national series dirt-track race in 43 years. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Posted: 24 Jul 2013 09:00 PM PDT Atletico Mineiro have won the Brazilian championship once and their state championship 42 times, but the Copa Libertadores has eluded them until Wednesday. They entered the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final trailing, 2-0, to three-time champions Olimpia and found a way to overturn that deficit, scoring twice in the second half to force extra time and, eventually, penalties. They never missed from the spot, prevailing, 4-2, in a shootout. Ronaldinho, who was signed by CAM in 2012, joins an elite club of five other players to have won the UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores, as well as a list of three others who have captured both trophies and the World Cup. Atletico Mineiro are the ninth Brazilian club to win South America's continental championship, joining Corinthians, who won their first title last year. The first half wasn't nearly as wide-open as the second half and extra time, because Olimpia attempted to defend their lead and Atletico Mineiro played a bit less frantically. Olimpia had the first big chance of the game in the 15th minute, when Wilson Pittoni won a ball to start a move, resulting in Juan Manuel Salgueiro finding Fredy Bareiro. The Olimpia forward's tame shot was easily saved, and he was subbed off for Juan Carlos Ferreyra at the half. Jo gave Atletico Mineiro their way back into the match in the 47th minute, assisted by an unfortunate defensive error. Pittoni completely misplayed a cross into the box, inadvertently setting up Jo, who buried a shot from 12 yards out. Both teams had plenty of chances to score between then and the end of the half, though Atletico Mineiro certainly had the better of them for a while. Leonardo Silva, who was consistently threatening for his club late in the game, hit the crossbar in the 59th minute. Olimpia keeper Martin Silva had a number of big saves, denying Leonardo Silva in the 70th minute and making a brilliant save on a deflected Ronaldinho shot in the 78th. Ferreyra had the tie on his foot in the 82nd minute after the ball fell into his path with the goal at his mercy, but he slipped and never got a chance to attempt a shot. While that didn't cause the ensuing events at the end of the second half, it certainly proved to be the point at which Olimpia's fortunes turned. In the 84th minute, Julio Cesar Manzur was caught in a tight spot, with Alecsandro about to beat him in a dangerous position. He bodychecked the CAM forward and was shown a second yellow card, taking his side down to 10 men. Olimpia's lack of numbers probably played a part in the equalizer, though there's no taking away from Leonardo Silva, whose goal was absolutely brilliant. Bernard, who will be making a move to Europe shortly, set up the goal with a looping cross towards the far post. Silva rose up to meet it at a high point and placed a stunning looping header over Martin Silva that dropped just under the top corner, leveling the tie on aggregate and setting up extra time. The first half of extra time went very much in favor of Atletico Mineiro, who looked to make the most of their man advantage and avoid a shootout. Rever hit the crossbar in the 98th minute and his effort was immediately followed up by a stinging shot by Guilherme, whose shot was saved. Eventually, CAM's attackers -- specifically Bernard, whose severe cramps made him a statue -- wore down and they were unable to attack with the same ferocity. Olimpia went first in the penalty shootout and set the tone immediately with a poor miss. Herminio Miranda took a poor shot, directly down the middle, and Victor came up with a kick save. Every taker made their shot until Matias Gimenez struck the decisive spot kick off the post, sending the Atletico Mineiro fans into raptures. Alfonso Soriano says he would approve trade to Yankees Posted: 24 Jul 2013 08:44 PM PDT Alfonso Soriano met with Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein Tuesday night to give him a list of teams for whom Soriano would waive his no-trade clause. Among those teams is the New York Yankees, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. More Cubs coverage: Bleed Cubbie Blue The Yankees have been rumored to be pursuing Soriano strongly, with a potential trade being very close. Soriano himself said that the trade is "not 100%" but he "think(s) it is that close." In Soriano, the Yankees would acquire a power threat that the team has been sorely missing. Currently, only Robinson Cano has more home runs for New York than Soriano's 17 long balls this season. Soriano started his career with the Yankees, but was the main piece sent to Texas when the team acquired Alex Rodriguez from the Rangers. Now, New York wants to bring Soriano back in part to replace the production of the absent Rodriguez, who has missed all year due to injury and is likely facing a suspension relating to the Biogenesis scandal. Soriano is hitting .254/.287/.467 this season and is still owed another $18 million in 2014. Given that, it is unlikely that he brings back a significant return for the Cubs. Angels remove Joe Blanton from starting rotation Posted: 24 Jul 2013 08:10 PM PDT The Los Angeles Angels have removed pitcher Joe Blanton from the starting rotation. The team announced that Garrett Richards would instead start on Saturday, according to the Angels' official Twitter page. Blanton has been ineffective this season for the Angels, posting a 5.66 ERA and 1.595 WHIP over 20 starts. He has been hit hard by hitters, with home runs being particularly damaging. His strikeout and walk numbers have not been bad, but that could not save him from being placed in the bullpen. More Angels coverage: Halos Heaven Blanton leads the American League in a number of statistical categories, including losses (13), hits allowed (137), earned runs (73) and home runs (24). The Angels signed Blanton to a two-year contract worth $15 million in the offseason. The deal includes a team option for a third year that could earn Blanton another $8 million. Richards, a former top-100 prospect, has been in and out of the Angels' rotation since first breaking into the majors in 2011. He has started 16 of 71 career games, with a 4.92 starting ERA. That includes four starts in April for the Angels, during which he allowed 16 earned runs over 26 innings. Ross Detwiler injury: Nationals LHP has pinched nerve, out a month Posted: 24 Jul 2013 07:51 PM PDT Nationals starting pitcher Ross Detwiler will miss another month due to a pinched nerve, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. Detwiler received an injection on Wednesday to help with the injury. He had flown to Los Angeles Tuesday night to visit with renowned surgeon Robert Watkins, Sr., who specializes in back injuries. The Nationals placed Detwiler on the disabled list July 7 after the pitcher felt stiffness in his back following a bullpen session. Dan Haren was activated from the DL to take Detwiler's spot in the rotation. More Nationals coverage: Federal Baseball On the season, Detwiler has a 4.04 ERA and 1.486 WHIP over 13 starts. He missed a month early in the season with a strained oblique, an injury that appears to be unrelated to his current issue. The Nationals hadn't been expecting Detwiler to return until August, but this setback would appear to keep him out past their original expectations. John Wall, Wizards near 5-year maximum extension Posted: 24 Jul 2013 07:42 PM PDT John Wall and the Washington Wizards are nearing an agreement on a five-year maximum contract extension worth about $80 million, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of the month. More: Bullets Forever on Wall Wall, the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, has had a bit of an up-and-down start to his career. He has battled injuries, turnover problems and an inconsistent jump shot, but he has also displayed the ability that made him the top pick. After a knee injury forced Wall to miss the first two-plus months of last season, he came back and played the best basketball of his career. The 22-year-old averaged 18.5 points, 7.6 assists and 4.0 rebounds for the year, and he was even better than that during the last two months of the season. In March and April, Wall posted averages of 22.7 points and 7.8 assists while shooting 46.5 percent from the field. Washington is clearly banking on Wall building off his strong finish to the year. It may seem like a bit of a risk to give the youngster the max without proving himself a bit more, but this should make Wall happy instead of being worried about his contract status heading into next offseason.
