Tour de France 2013, Stage 12: Route, TV schedule and more

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT

The Tour de France will head into the non-ironically named Tours on Thursday morning as the cyclists race from Fougères for a relatively flat 218 kilometers.

The stage is set up to be a sprinter's race, but the small and steep hills, road conditions and inconsistent weather always seems to put a damper on it truly being a "sprint."

Geoatlas_medium_medium

Mark Cavendish is the favorite, according to SB Nation cycling site Podium Cafe, even after he was doused with urine earlier in the race. That would be quite impressive considering the 28-year-old currently sits in 149th place after the completion of Stage 11, but Chris Fontecchio seems optimistic about his chances.

Can there be any doubting the magical power of human urine, which has transformed Cav into a sympathetic figure? He's also very fast, and while Kittel's win yesterday may herald the arrival, at last, of someone fast enough to take on Cav directly, it'll be the Manxman with all the motivation, and a very strong squad, on his side.

The stage is set to begin at 6:50 a.m. ET, according to Steephill.tv. U.S. television coverage will begin at 8 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Network and online coverage will be provided by Tour de France Live (although it requires a fee).

Scottish Open 2013 streaming: How to watch live online

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 01:30 AM PDT

American golf fans will get a week to get used to the time change at the Open Championship at Muirfield if they plan on following Phil Mickelson and the Euro Tour stop at the Scottish Open this week. The Scottish Open has become a preparatory stop for many of the top players in the world who adjust to the time change, weather conditions, and links style course the week prior to the season's third major.

Mickelson almost always plays the week before a major championship, and the move from Loch Lomond to Castle Stuart, a much more linsky test, made this appearance completely expected. Last year, he was a late addition after missing the cut at Greenbrier, as Lefty scrambled to adjust his schedule and get in some more work before the British. He'll play with Padraig Harrington and Stephen Gallacher through the first two rounds, drawing the largest galleries and all the TV cameras.

The streaming options for the Euro Tour events are limited compared to the weekly PGA Tour stops, but Sky Sports does have a live online simulcast available on their website. You will have to register for their service, but they are scheduled to carry the first two rounds beginning at 5:30 a.m. ET and the weekend rounds beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Scottish Open TV Schedule

Golf Channel (with stream via Sky Sports)

Thursday, July 11 -- 5:30 a.m ET to 12:30 p.m. ET
Friday, July 12 -- 5:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 13 -- 9:30 a.m to Noon
Sunday, July 14 -- 9:30 a.m to Noon

2013 Scottish Open: Tee times, TV schedule and streaming for Thursday's round

The final tune-up for the 2013 Open Championship starts Thursday as the European Tour stops at Castle Stuart for the Scottish Open. This event is often populated with some of the best players in the world as they get in some final reps on a links-style course and in weather conditions they're likely to face for the season's third major. This is the third year that the tournament will be played at Castle Stuart after the switch from Loch Lomond, the historic venue for this event but one that was not a links-style preparatory test for next week's major.

Phil Mickelson is the biggest non-Euro player in the field this week, continuing his routine of playing the week before a major. Mickelson missed the cut last week on the PGA Tour's stop at Greenbrier, leaving two extra days to jet overseas and adjust to the Scottish-British Open double. The links golf of Scotland does not set up well for Mickelson, who rarely contends at the Open in the same way he regularly pops up on the leaderboard at the other three majors. But a second-place finish in 2011 boosted Mickelson's confidence and approach in the more challenging conditions, which he'll practice through this week. On Thursday, he's paired with Stephen Gallacher and Padraig Harrington in the first wave off No. 10.

The Golf Channel will have live TV coverage of the Scottish Open starting before dawn in the eastern United States. The broadcast will come on the air at 5:30 a.m. ET and run until 12:30 p.m (a simulcast stream is available on Sky Sports after registering for their service). Mickelson is set to go at 3:35 a.m. ET so the coverage should feature his entire back nine. Here's the complete tee sheet for Thursday's opening round, with all times ET:

NBA free agency: Bobcats exploring sign-and-trade options with Gerald Henderson, per report

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 09:26 PM PDT

20130413_tjg_bw4_626

The Charlotte Bobcats are exploring sign-and-trade possibilities with multiple teams about restricted free agent Gerald Henderson after contract negotiations stalled, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Henderson has received little buzz on the free-agent market, and it appeared that he would be heading back to Charlotte. The Bobcats have plenty of money to offer Henderson, but either they're low-balling him or he doesn't want to return to the team without a more lucrative contract.

Henderson was productive last season in Charlotte, averaging 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He shot 44.7 percent from the field and 33.0 percent from three-point range.

While Henderson is not a star by any means, he could be a good role player on the right team. The 25-year-old has displayed solid scoring ability in Charlotte and has decent size for a shooting guard along with great athleticism. A team could wind up getting a steal if it's able to acquire the former Duke standout at the right price.

Bret Bielema's latest Twitter adventure involves Ole Miss recruit

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 09:19 PM PDT

157691232

The "search" and "compose Tweet" boxes are oh-so similar. It's the premise behind the famed Old Man Search twitter account. Bret Bielema found this out the hard way.

For a brief moment, Bielema tweeted two simple words "Andy bauer". He very quickly deleted it. Luckily, several of SB Nation's blogs were quick enough to catch him beforehand:

Who's Andy Bauer, you might ask? He's a four-star offensive tackle recruit from St. Louis who picked Ole Miss over Arkansas and a host of other schools. Coaches aren't allowed to mention unsigned recruits by name, so that's technically not a violation, although it's clearly just an accident in this case. Poor guy was just curious.

This is particularly bad timing: Wednesday, Arkansas released the cover of its new media guide, and it very prominently features the Twitter handles of Bielema and several Arkansas players. Did they make a mistake putting Twitter up front for someone who may or may not know how to use Twitter?

No. Let's dip into the wayback machine, and check out some of THE TWITTER ADVENTURES OF BRET BIELEMA.

And many, many, more. BERT is a master of social media, and besides, Memphis basketball coach Josh Pastner made this exact same mistake once upon a time.

1-0, WPS.

Leon Goretzka completes transfer to Schalke

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 09:17 PM PDT

172681128

Schalke have finally completed the deal to bring Leon Goretzka to Gelsenkirchen from VfL Bochum. The 2.Bundesliga side had been pushing for a higher transfer fee, and it is believed to be around €3-4 million. The deal will keep the talented young player with Schalke through the summer of 2018.

Goretzka, 18, was fantastic for Bochum this year in his first season as a professional. He played all across the midfield and helped the club just avoid the relegation playoff place. Goretzka is the second young player brought into Schalke this summer along with the addition of Köln midfielder Christian Clemens.

Sporting Director Horst Heldt on the transfer:

"We're absolutely delighted that in Leon Goretzka another colossal talent in addition to Max Meyer has made a conscious decision in favour of FC Schalke 04. Leon is one of the most talented players in Germany and has huge potential. He was on the wanted list of lots of clubs but he sees the biggest opportunity to develop as a player here with us."

Goretzka will get the opportunity to show what he's got early against tough competition as Schalke will have to qualify for the Champions League's group stage through the playoff.

NBA free agency: Jeff Teague, Bucks agree to 4-year offer sheet

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 08:54 PM PDT

20130327_ter_sh5_042

Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent point guard Jeff Teague will sign a four-year, $32 million offer sheet with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

New Bucks coach Larry Drew has helped push the interest in Teague despite the fact that Brandon Jennings expressed a desire to return to Milwaukee. Drew coached Teague in Atlanta, so there's plenty of familiarity there, and having the 25-year-old point guard in place could help ease the transition in Milwaukee.

Teague averaged 14.6 points and 7.2 assists while shooting 45.1 percent for the Hawks last season. While Teague's ceiling may not be as high as that of Jennings, he's a bit more efficient and would come at a cheaper price tag. Jennings averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 assists last year, but he shot just 39.9 percent from the field and has been looking for a deal around $12 million a year.

The Hawks have three days to match the offer for Teague if they want to retain his services.
