AC Milan to land another talented youngster?

Posted: 08 Jul 2013 11:50 PM PDT

Adem Ljajic is rumored to be on his way out at Fiorentina. His contract expires in 2014, but the Italian media are continuously reporting the significant distance between what he is asking and what the viola are ready to offer to induce a fresh signature. Ljajic could follow ex-viola captain Riccardo Montolivo to AC Milan, although the rossoneri are willing to wait a year for his contract to expire. Or he could end up with Atlético Madrid, another club rumored to be interested.

Ljajic's fate is intertwined with that of Stevan Jovetic, as Fali Ramadani, who represents both of them (as well as Stefan Savic, Haris Seferovic and Marko Bakic) doesn't seem to have a great relationship with Fiorentina's board. It is rumored that the first problems came when Fiorentina didn't want to sell the Montenegrin star last summer, despite Ramadani having lined up a buyer for Jovetic.

To further complicate matters, it seems Ljajic is asking for a yearly wage of about 1.6 million euros, with is almost three times what he earns now. It seems that if Viola were to let Jovetic move to Juventus, it would be easier to negotiate a new contract for Ljajic. However, Fiorentina owner Andrea Della Valle insists that the bianconeri will need to pay at least €30m in exchange for the Montenegrin.

Yairo Yau returns to Sydney FC on loan

Panamanian striker Yairo Yau has signed a new deal with Sydney FC after a productive first season on loan from Sporting San Miguelito. The 23-year-old striker will get another chance to combine with Alessandro Del Piero and a first crack at working with newly-signed Corey Gamerio in 2013/14. Yau's second loan deal will reach through the end of the upcoming season.

A club press release quoted Yau as saying:

"I am happy to be continuing my career with Sydney FC. I like Sydney, the fans and my teammates. I am excited to be back in the Sydney FC team."

Manager Frank Farina had much more to say about bringing the dynamic Panamanian attacker back to the A-League:

"Yairo is young, he's 23, he scored six goals ten appearances last year so that was the key. If you ask any football manager in the world what their priority is, it would be a striker who can score goals, has pace and is comfortable on the ball and he ticks all of those boxes.

"Coming to a new country, a new football culture is always difficult and with the attributes he has, he's very quick and can score goals. We thought he was well worth another look for another season where he won't have any transitional period and hopefully he can improve on that goal tally.

"I'm expecting more from him, I'm expecting him to be better because he won't need to settle in, he knows the players, the club and the league now. Hopefully that will be a benefit and he'll do even better than he did last year."

NBA free agency: Knicks interested in Chauncey Billups, per report

The New York Knicks want Chauncey Billups, but due to their salary situation -- ironically, one partically caused by Billups -- they're unlikely to get him. Reason being is that Billups is not interested in playing for a minimum contract, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.

Billups briefly played for the Knicks following the Carmelo Anthony trade in the middle of the 2011 season. New York opted to exercise a team option for $14.2 million instead of buying him out for $3.7 million. After the NBA's lockout ended, though, the team decided to use the one-time amnesty clause on Billups to create the cap room necessary to trade for Tyson Chandler.

The Knicks currently have several huge contracts on their ledger, most notably the over $40 million in commitments owed to Amar'e Stoudemire. He'd be a prime amnesty candidate due to his inability to stay effective and healthy, but the Knicks have already used their amnesty clause on Billups.

When Jason Kidd went to the Brooklyn Nets as their new head coach, the Knicks lost one of their three point guards on a squad that was most successful playing two at a time. Adding Billups, a 36-year-old whose veteran leadership capabilities rival Kidd's, would help greatly in that department. To convince him to play, though, they'll need more than a minimum salary ... and since the Knicks are over the salary cap, they can't afford that.

Honduras vs. Haiti, 2013 Gold Cup: Final score 2-0, Haitians can't finish clear chances

Posted: 08 Jul 2013 08:48 PM PDT

Haiti were the much better team than Honduras between the penalty areas on Monday night, but they were horrible on either end of the pitch. They created more than enough chances to put Los Catrachos away, but their finishing was absolutely horrendous. Honduras only created two shots on target, but buried both of them to secure a 2-0 win.

Things got off to a horrible start for Haiti, with Honduras going ahead after just four minutes. A terrible giveaway in midfield led to Mario Martinez picking out Rony Martinez with a through ball, and he finished from a narrow angle. Haiti created multiple clear chances between then and the end of the half, but their shooting was laughable. Leonel Saint-Preux had the worst miss of the half in the 20th minute, skying a shot a solid 10 yards over the crossbar from inside the box when it was easier to score.

The second half was more of the same. Haiti continued to create shots, but did absolutely nothing with them. Honduras closed out the match with a 78th minute goal, scored by Marvin Chavez. Brayan Beckeles set it up with a pass from the right flank to the top of the penalty area, where Chavez was unmarked. He was left with a simple side-footed finish to double his team's lead and secure a victory.

NBA free agency: Will Bynum, Pistons agree to two-year contract, per report

Will Bynum will stick with the franchise that he's played with for all but one year of his NBA career, signing a two-year, $5.75 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, according to Sam Amick of USA Today.

Bynum's ceiling is pretty much as a backup point guard, but he's not a bad one and the price is good for that spot. The 30-year-old averaged 9.8 points per game in only 18.8 minutes of playing time last season, just a tad off of his career high. The starting point guard on Georgia Tech's 2004 runner-up squad isn't much of a shooter, but at 6'0 -- if that -- he's got speed, and also dished out 3.6 assists in his limited court time.

The Pistons backcourt already lost Jose Calderon, the most expensive player on the team's roster last year, when he signed a 4-year, $28 million dollar deal with the Dallas Mavericks. They still have Brandon Knight, who's a point guard but has looked more to score in his first two years in the NBA, and Rodney Stuckey, who averaged 11.5 points primarily off the bench. Those two, or perhaps Kyle Singler, will likely be the starters in the backcourt.

More from Detroit Bad Boys: Knight says, "I'm a point guard"

Detroit needs guys capable of getting the ball to young bigs Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond -- and also Josh Smith, whose new $56 million contract also got rid of a good share of their cap space. For that, Bynum's a solid third option at his price.

Bynum's career averages are 8.1 points and 3.2 assists. He is, of course, the lesser of two Bynums on this year's free agent market.

2013 MLB All-Star Game: Travis Wood slated to be unavailable to pitch

Posted: 08 Jul 2013 08:06 PM PDT

20120309_jel_bh1_375

Chicago Cubs pitcher Travis Wood might not be able to pitch in the All-Star Game because he is due to pitch the Sunday before against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago.

MLB rules state that Wood could decide to pitch a single inning in the All-Star Game, but the Cubs instead elected to use the other option. That option was informing NL manager Bruce Bochy that he will need to select an alternative player instead of the lone Cubs' option.

Chicago manager Dale Sveum reasoned in the report that pitching Sunday night against the Cardinals is as good a showcase of his talent as any.

"The good thing is he'll be pitching Sunday night," manager Dale Sveum said before the Cubs played the White Sox on Monday. "A pretty good venue for a guy that obviously deserves as much as anyone to be in the game. And to pitch Sunday night against the Cardinals leading into the All-Star Game is about as promoting the All-Star Game as much as anything. That's about as good as you can get other than playing in it."

The National League pitcher pool for All-Star candidates is pretty strong this year so Bochy likely won't waste much time in naming a replacement. He is not required to select a Cubs pitcher, either, meaning the team could go without a representative in this year's game.

NBA free agency: Cavaliers offer Andrew Bynum 2-year, $24 million contract

Posted: 08 Jul 2013 07:44 PM PDT

20130311_hcs_sy4_023

Andrew Bynum reportedly wants a one-year contract to prove he's capable of playing in the NBA at a high level before hitting the free agent market again. The Cleveland Cavaliers are pushing him to take a deal that could last two years, however, so that he can join a youth movement featuring a pair of recent No. 1 picks.

The Cavs want Bynum to sign a two-year, $24-million offer, with a team option on the second year, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. That contract would be a win-win for the Cavs: if he's not ready to go, they pay him $12 million at a time that they already have the free cap space to pay him and then they're done with him. If he's as good as he's been in the past, however, they get the ability to bring back a potential max player at a discount price.

The 25-year-old Bynum made nearly $17 million this past season.

The Cavs join the Mavericks and the Hawks as teams reportedly in the hunt for Bynum, a player that made the All-Star Game for the first time in 2011-2012 and then never took the court last year, his lone year with the Philadelphia 76ers. The question for all of these teams is whether or not the talented big man with chronic knee issues will be healthy enough to make a significant impact.

The last time Bynum was healthy, he averaged a very solid double-double with 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds. His injury last year dragged on and on and on and on, however -- take a peek at SB Nation's story stream which tracks the situation from mediocre to bad to worse to horrific -- and knee issues with big men aren't the type of thing that gets better overnight. The Cavs' plan for a one-year deal with an option for a second seems rather low-risk, though, all things considered.

The Cavs have young talent in Kyrie Irving and Anthony Bennett to go with oodles and oodles of cap space. Their big signing thus far this offseason, though, has been Jarrett Jack ... which isn't exactly pushing the needle.

Cleveland could couple Bynum with Anderson Varejao, who missed the end of last season with a blood clot. That would be a shockingly viable frontcourt for a squad that started promising, unpolished youngsters Tristan Thompson and Tyler Zeller for large stretches of last year.
