Wimbledon 2013: Time, TV schedule, live streaming for Friday's matches

With the women's final now set, Friday will see the four remaining men face off to get the finals of their bracket set. Wednesday saw Juan Martin Del Potro, Novak Djokovic, Jerzy Janowicz and Andy Murray all advance.

Del Potro, the No. 8 seed for the tournament, bested No. 4 seed David Ferrer 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(5). He'll take on Djokovic, who defeated No. 7 Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-3. Del Potro defeated Djokovic in the 2012 Olympics bronze-medal match, so there's an interesting storyline there.

Murray, the No. 2 seed, struggled in his matchup against unseeded Fernando Verdasco. Murray fell behind two sets before rallying back to take down the weary Verdasco, ultimately winning 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5. He'll play Janowicz, the No. 24 seed of the tournament. Janowicz took down Lukasz Kubot in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic is favored to win as the highest seed remaining, but Del Potro is always a tough go, and he's motivated by reaching the semfinals for the first time since 2009. Janowicz is a wild card at this point, but seeing him fell Murray wouldn't be the most shocking thing this tournament, given what's happened thus far.

ESPN carries the broadcast for the semifinals on Friday. Their coverage begins at 8 a.m. ET and runs through 2 p.m. If you're watching online, there's WatchESPN.com and Wimbledon's official live video. A full schedule can be found here.

Ryo Nagai returns to Perth Glory

After playing seventeen games with Perth in 2012/13, Ryo Nagai is coming back to the Glory on a full-season loan from J.League side Cerezo Osaka. The 22-year-old playmaker scored twice in the A-League last season and was instrumental in propelling Perth into the finals.

Said manager of Alistair Edwards of the renewed loan, in a club press release:

"I'm thrilled that we've managed to bring Ryo back to the club for the whole of next season. Ryo finished last season extremely well and became very much a crowd favourite. He's very versatile and can play wide on the right or left and also down the middle and he's so well though of here at Glory. He's become one of the family and everyone loves him. The players have so much respect for him, he's a great guy to have around and he's very exciting to watching. Ryo himself loves it here and he's the one who really pushed for the move."

With rising stars Daniel De Silva and Jamie Maclaren already in the fold, Nagai adds yet another young, attacking presence to what looks like an exciting Glory side. If Perth are able to capture Richard Garcia to provide service to the bevy of forwards, a finals appearance could be just the start of the expectations for the Glory.

Marcos Flores released by Melbourne Victory

The worst-kept secret in the A-League was confirmed today as Melbourne Victory released Marquee Player Marcos Flores after a single season, according to a brief club press release. The 27-year-old Argentine departs Melbourne having completed just one of the two years his contract stipulated.

The Victory had previously been linked with Giorgos Karagounis but the Greek captain is apparently no longer fielding offers from the Melbourne side. Yet even with the original reason for jettisoning Flores now not available, Ange Postecoglou has set the former Johnny Warren medal winner adrift.

Earlier reporting suggested Flores could make his way to Central Coast Mariners as their first ever Marquee Player, which is now much more likely given Flores' release from the Victory. Though the handsomely paid Argentine's every move will be followed, at least as long as he is considering other A-League clubs, the Victory's search for an international Marquee Player will dominate headlines until the position has been filled.

Coke Zero 400: Jimmie Johnson: Restarts are not in my head

In recent weeks Jimmie Johnson has committed noticeable gaffes on restarts at Dover and Kentucky, and in both instances it cost the NASCAR driver potential victories.

As a result, the five-time Sprint Cup champion is changing how he approaches restarts vowing to "lighten up."

"I know the rule," Johnson said Friday at Daytona International Speedway. "I feel like I'm maybe a little focused on the way the rule reads exactly and paying maybe too close of attention to that."

There are some who believe Johnson is thinking too much about restarts and the issue may be in his head. It's a notion he disagrees with.

"I'm not smart enough to let it get in my head," he said laughing. "So we are fine there. There is not much between these ears."

Johnson's problems began last month at Dover when he jumped a restart with 19 laps remaining and was subsequently penalized. Afterward he was critical of NASCAR and how officials enforced and interrupted the rules regarding restarts.

His issues continued last week at Kentucky. While running second, Johnson accused leader Matt Kenseth of not maintaining proper speed as the two entered the restart zone. His slow start allowed the field to close behind him and Johnson spun entering Turn 1.

"There are a lot of restarts, especially during the Kentucky race that I brought down that I feel like a good citizen, a good student in doing exactly what I'm supposed to," Johnson said. "There are other times when I don't feel that exactly happens and that it's not called on or viewed from the tower as kind of the rule reads.

"At the end of the day I'm just going to lighten up on how I think about it and use that zone and that area regardless of the way the rule reads to get an advantage and worry about myself."

Kenseth understands Johnson's frustration losing a race he probably would have won otherwise. But he also maintains he was not going excessively slow and Johnson's downfall was his own fault.

"Since Dover at least, I think Jimmie's been very frustrated with restarts," Kenseth said. "And I think last weekend he just didn't have good restarts. For whatever reason, his car wouldn't restart fast. We've all had cars like that."

Going forward Johnson contends he will approach restarts differently.

"At the end of the day it doesn't matter how I interpret the rule, it's how it's enforced," Johnson said. "That is the thing that I'm trying to focus on now. It doesn't matter how I read it, what I think.

"Clearly the way I've felt a few things have gone are different than the way it's enforced. The way it's enforced is all that matters. That is where I'm focusing now."

Mets to recall Ike Davis from Triple-A, per reports

The New York Mets have recalled first baseman Ike Davis from the minor leagues, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Andy Martino of the New York Daily News later confirmed the report. Davis is expected to join the Mets on Friday during their road trip to Milwaukee. There is no word on who will be sent down to free up a roster spot.

Davis was demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 10 during a massive slump, hitting just .161/.242/.258 with five home runs and 66 strikeouts in 207 plate appearances. In addition to his demotion, the Mets also sent down left-handed pitcher Robert Carson and outfielder Mike Baxter.

Since arriving in Las Vegas, Davis revamped his hitting mechanics and his numbers improved, as he hit .293/.424/.667 with seven homers in 92 plate appearances.

Josh Satin has been filling in at first base since Davis' demotion, hitting .353 and reaching base in 14 straight games. It's unknown how manager Terry Collins plans to handle playing time with Davis back.

Dwight Howard free agency odds show Rockets as favorites to sign center

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 06:45 PM PDT

Dwight Howard has visited with five possible suitors this past week: the Hawks, Lakers, Mavericks, Rockets and Warriors. As Howard weighs the pros and cons of each franchise, the oddsmakers in Las Vegas have determined Houston is the frontrunner to sign the All-Pro center.

According to Odds Shark, the Rockets have been listed at +140 to sign Howard. For those unfamiliar with betting lines, that means a bet of $100 would win $140.

Howard's most recent team, the Lakers, were given the second-best odds at +180. It's interesting that those in Vegas go against what most media members tend to think, especially given all the turmoil the franchise went through last year as they went from an NBA Finals contender to just barely earning a postseason berth in a matter of months.

The Dallas Mavericks are listed third at +300. Owner Mark Cuban seems determined to make a splash this offseason after missing out last summer.

The Atlanta Hawks are fourth at +950. Howard was born and raised in Atlanta and would fit nicely with the up-and-coming Hawks.

The Warriors are listed at +1000, giving them the lowest odds of any of the five contenders. Golden State has begun trying to clear salary cap space to land Howard, although a sign-and-trade would likely be required in order to bring D-12 to the Bay Area.

Mark Wahlberg visits Michigan football, hilarity ensues

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 06:41 PM PDT

Movie and music star Mark Wahlberg visited Michigan Wolverines football practice Wednesday, catching some passes from quarterback Devin Gardner and taking pictures with players. Wahlberg is filming Transformers 4 in the area. The video of Wahlberg's visit to Ann Arbor is courtest of WXYZ, Detroit's ABC affiliate.

The anchor futilely references Marky Mark's first breakout hit, "Good Vibrations." Given that the song is older than the quarterback who was throwing him passes, I think we can do better.

Five Jokes About Mark Wahlberg Visiting Michigan Football

Wahlberg caught a pair of touchdown passes from Gardner. Those two scores will give Wahlberg the Big Ten touchdown reception lead until November.

The NCAA saw footage of Wahlberg catching passes and, recognizing him as former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Vince Papale from the movie Invincible, put Michigan on probation for the next two years.

In Planet of the Apes, Wahlberg found himself on a planet just like his, only completely dominated by once-inferior creatures. Michigan Men know this as the Big Ten during the Rich Rodriguez era.

Mark Wahlberg is the youngest of nine children. He's the first little brother to visit Michigan Stadium since Michigan State played there last October.

Wahlberg starred in The Big Hit in 1998. Michigan starred in The Big Hit of 2012.

Dwight Howard free agency: Mark Cuban, Mavericks keep quiet about pitch to star center

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 06:35 PM PDT

20121107_lbm_an4_272

The Dallas Mavericks met with superstar free agent Dwight Howard on Tuesday. Though there have been no reports indicating what was discussed during the presentation, that's exactly how Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wants it, according to ESPN's Tim McMahon.

"We never talk about what we do. We don't test the waters in the media. We don't troll on Twitter," Cuban wrote to McMahon in an e-mail.

Cuban goes on to say that the privacy Dallas operates under allows the Mavs to have more open conversations with teams and players.

Dallas is one of five teams in the running to land Howard, the NBA's most coveted free agent this summer. The Mavericks were the fourth team to make a pitch to Howard. A decision from the superstar center will reportedly come on Friday.

The Mavericks group included Cuban, Dirk Nowitzki, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, head coach Rick Carlisle, athletic trainer Casey Smith and director of analytics Roland Beech.

Nowitzki's contract with the Mavericks expires at the end of the 2013-2014 season, and he has indicated he would be willing to take a "significant pay cut" in order for Dallas to attract free agents in the future.
