Tour de France 2013, Stage 13: Route, TV schedule and more

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT

173280287

Stage 13 of the 2013 Tour de France will once again favor sprinters, starting flat before steadily climbing until the midpoint, and flattening out again. The 173 kilometer trek from Tours to Saint-Amand-Montrond does feature a potential curveball, however: A viciously steep uncategorized climb just 10 km from the finish that could serve as jumping point for any would-be breakaway winners.

Once again, Christopher Froome will ride in yellow as the Tour's general classification leader and Peter Sagan will ride in green as the man atop the points standings. Keen observers will want to train their eyes on Mark Cavendish. The British rider has had a rough week, from crashing into Tom Veelers in Stage 10, to getting urine thrown on him in Stage 11, to getting sniped at the finish of Stage 12 by Marcel Kittel.

SB Nation's cycling blog, Podium Cafe, writes that Cavendish vs. Kittel has become an "unexpected rivalry." Cavendish has earned a reputation as perhaps the world's fastest man on two wheels, but Kittel has challenged that assertion by winning three stages to Cavendish's one on this year's Tour. Via Podium Cafe:

Cav has outlasted and outkicked everyone since about 2007. Is Kittel about to change all that? Let's not get ahead of ourselves on calling him the new king, but the suggestion of a change is certainly in the air.

Live television coverage will once again begin at 8 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Network. Those stuck to their computer or a smart phone can try NBCSN's digital service, but there is a fee.

Scottish Open 2013: Tee times, TV schedule and streaming for Friday's round

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 11:00 PM PDT

173264726

The Scottish Open continues at Castle Stuart on Friday with Englishman John Parry holding a one shot lead after a low round of 64 on Thursday. The conditions were relatively benign on the links style course in Scotland, with the sun mostly out and the wind fairly down. That led to several low numbers which will be hard to replicate next week at Muirfield, and may be hard to post again here in Inverness.

The biggest name in the field, Phil Mickelson, also went low on Thursday and is just two shots off the lead at 6-under. Mickelson said after the round that he left some shots out on the course, and given the conditions, it could have been a round in the low 60s. But with his spotty track record on overseas links layouts, he'll take the opening round 66 and work to stay in contention as the weekend approaches. He'll be off in the second wave on Friday, going out again with Padraig Harrington and Stephen Gallacher at 8:35 a.m. in the eastern US.

Golf Channel will once again have the coverage bright and early from Scotland, coming on the air at 5:30 a.m. ET. The broadcast is scheduled to run until 12:30 p.m. so nearly all of Mickelson's round should be featured. Sky Sports also offers a simulcast livestream of the coverage once you register for their service.

Mexico vs. Canada: Final score 2-0, Sloppy El Tri get first Gold Cup win

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 09:59 PM PDT

20130711_ajw_ab9_081

Mexico weren't very good on Thursday night at CenturyLink Field. In fact, for the first 40 minutes they were downright awful, but Canada was equally as bad so a couple bright moments and some luck proved to be enough for El Tri to come away with a 2-0 win.

Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre did not silence any of his critics with Mexico's performance as Mexico struggled to do much of anything in the early going. Their passing was sloppy, their defending lax and their creativity absent as Canada had the best chances to start.

For complete coverage of El Tri visit: FMF State of Mind

Just because Canada held their own did not make their play any good. They were awful as well, predictably so, and the match was near unwatchable.

The abomination of a match looked like it would go into the break scoreless, but Mexico took advantage of non-existent marking just before halftime to grab the opening goal. A flicked on header of a corner kick found Raul Jimenez, who was completely unmarked from the start, and a header put El Tri in front.

Mexico added to their lead in the second half thanks to a Marco Fabian dive. He went down, the referee blew his whistle and El Tri had a spot kick. Fabian converted it with ease and Mexico was 2-0 up.

While Mexico were a little better in the second half, and certainly better than Canada, they were still far from good. They struggled to turn possession into chances and were still leaky at the back. Marcel de Jong almost cut the Mexico lead in half with a free kick that rattled the bar, but that was Canada's best chance so even if it went in an equalizer was not coming.

With the win, Mexico are level with Martinique with three points, good for second place in Group A. Panama are still at the top of the group with six points, while Canada are bringing up the rear with no points.

Diamondbacks going to closer by committee

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 09:14 PM PDT

20130710_mjr_su5_213

The Diamondbacks will reportedly go to a closer by committee, according to Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona.

The move comes as a response to another blown save by embattled former-closer Heath Bell, who has struggled for the majority of the 2013 season. The team will use relievers based on the match-ups and situation until the All-Star Break, which they will presumably make a long-term decision afterwards.

Bell, 35, has an ERA of 4.72 over 34 1/3 innings pitched during the 2013 season. He has struggled much of the past few seasons, and has been unable to rediscover his once-stellar form.

Some of their more appealing options include right-handers David Hernandez and Brad Ziegler, but they may be hesitant to play around with bullpen roles too much this close to the All-Star Break.

Trevor Cahill injury: Diamondbacks RHP could be out until August

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 08:42 PM PDT

20130402_mjr_su5_361

The Diamondbacks could be without starting pitcher Trevor Cahill until August, reports Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona.

Magruder also reports that Brandon McCarthy will be out until the end of July, saying that Cahill "may be longer." The team currently has just four starters, with prospect Tyler Skaggs being a potential replacement in the rotation for the right-hander.

Cahill is trying to recover from a hip contusion, which landed him on the disabled list on July 1.

Cahill, 25, has an ERA of 4.66 in 96 2/3 innings this year for the Diamondbacks. He has pitched at least 200 innings for them each of the last two seasons, and most of his value comes from his ability to eat innings at a decent rate of effectiveness.

Arizona has a good amount of pitching depth, and could also go to long-reliever Josh Collmenter if they do not want to promote a prospect from the minor leagues.

UAB stadium proposal put on hold

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 08:38 PM PDT

20121124_ajl_af6_165

New University of Alabama-Birmingham president Ray Watts said this week that a proposed outdoor football stadium is "not a top strategic priority" for the university and plans won't move forward for the time being, according to a report from AL.com:

"While addressing the University of Alabama at Birmingham's new fundraising campaign, Watts said this week the stadium proposal is 'not a top strategic priority for us.'

'Because of the uncertainty of the federal budget and the implications of that for an institution like ours, we're going to hold off on any other major capital projects and use the resources we have to be as effective as possible,' he said."

Watts did say that he is focusing on improving attendance at UAB sporting events, though he chose not detail any specific plans for attracting students, alumni, and local fans to the Blazers' games. "I think you'll see over the coming year a very intensive program to get our faculty and employees and students out to support our student athletes and our teams," Watts said.

Watts inherited the stadium plan when he took over as UAB's president in February. At that time, he declined to take a specific stance on the proposal, saying instead that he is a "supporter of athletics" while directing the athletic department's focus on improving attendance. University of Alabama trustees had previously tabled the stadium proposal, citing a lack of attendance and support for the football program.

The proposed $75 million, 30,000-seat outdoor stadium was first proposed in September 2011, and would include 33 luxury suites and 24 additional boxes. More importantly, it would move the Blazers' home games on campus. UAB currently plays at the 71,000-seat Legion Field, which some students compain is far from campus and located in an unsafe neighborhood. The Blazers averaged just 15,271 fans at home games in 2012.

Ryan Vogelsong injury: Giants RHP throws bullpen session

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 08:08 PM PDT

Gyi0064492832

Giants starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong threw a bullpen session Thursday in front of a group of Giants decision-makers, reports Alex Pavlovic of The Mercury News.

Those in attendance included Giants manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti, among others. Vogelsong is currently trying to return from a fractured hand that he sustained earlier in the season.

With Matt Cain's health recently being questioned, the team could certainly use some depth in their rotation.

Vogelsong had an ERA of 7.19 before getting hurt earlier in the season, but has posted sub-4 ERAs each of the last two seasons for the Giants. For a team that is currently struggling greatly right now, getting back one of its most consistent starters could be a big boost.

He will still need to make some rehab starts, which he has not yet been cleared to do yet.

NBA Orlando Summer League roundup: Victor Oladipo carries Magic, Rockets heading to championship

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 07:50 PM PDT

20130627_jla_aa9_026

After a pair of afternoon games on Thursday, the match-up is set for Friday's "championship game" at the Orlando Summer League. The Houston Rockets wrapped up their perfect run through the summer slate with a lopsided win over Brooklyn, while Victor Oladipo hit a game-winning shot over another highly-ranked prospect from the 2013 NBA Draft to lead the Magic.

Victor Oladipo drills game-winner against 76ers

Oladipo, the No. 2 overall pick, drilled a step-back jumper over Michael Carter-Williams with 4.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to power the Orlando Magic's 90-89 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Here's a GIF of the game-winner:

Dipo

Oladipo had a strong showing for Orlando, scoring 24 points, dishing six assists and notching three steals. He also made three of his five three-point field goal attempts. Andrew Nicholson scored 24 points, and Kyle O'Quinn pulled down 11 rebounds for the Magic.

Arnett Moultrie put together a double-double for Philly with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Carter-Williams scored 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting. He had nine assists but eight turnovers as well.

The Sixers have now lost all four of their Orlando Summer League games.

Houston Rockets blast Brooklyn Nets

The Houston Rockets spread the ball around and handed the Brooklyn Nets their fourth loss in as many games with a 92-76 victory on Thursday. The Rockets had five players score in double-digits and will advance to the championship game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday.

The Rockets were led by Terrence Jones' 16 points and seven assists. Casper Ware was deadly from long range, draining four of his six three-point field goal attempts.

Brooklyn struggled from the field, shooting only 36 percent overall. Tyshawn Taylor scored 15 points and had seven assists to pad his stat line. Mason Plumlee had six points and five rebounds.

New Nets head coach Jason Kidd did not coach the game and instead watched with the crowd.
