Las Vegas Summer League 2013: Suns, Warriors advance to tournament final

The Las Vegas Summer League is wrapping up, with the title game of the new tournament now set for Monday. The final will be between the third-seeded Phoenix Suns and top-seeded Golden State Warriors, who advanced by winning Sunday night. Let's take a look at Sunday's games.

Suns edge Heat

The Suns blew a 20-point second-half lead, but recovered in time to beat the Miami Heat, 91-89. Markieff Morris scored the go-ahead bucket with 21.8 seconds to go, and D.J. Kennedy missed a potential game-winning three to seal it for Phoenix.

P.J. Tucker led five Suns in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-11 from the field. Morris had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Marcus Morris had 17 points before fouling out. Phoenix shot 54.4 percent overall and 44.4 percent from three.

The Suns led by three after the first quarter and by 14 heading into halftime. It appeared they would run away with the game early in the third quarter, but Miami closed the gap to five by the time the fourth quarter rolled around. The Heat took a three-point lead late in the fourth, but they weren't able to close the game out.

James Ennis had 25 points for Miami, while James Nunnally had 24 and was key in leading the comeback. Of Nunnally's 24 points, 21 came in the second half. Kennedy added 18 points and six rebounds. The Heat shot only 42.9 percent overall, but they hit 10 3-pointers and outscored the Suns by 10 from the free throw line.

Green leads Warriors over Bobcats

Draymond Green had 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Warriors defeated the Bobcats, 75-67. Cameron Jones scored a game-high 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting overall and 3-of-3 from 3-point range. Kent Bazemore chipped in 13 points in the victory.

Golden State started strong, taking a 19-13 lead after the first quarter. The Warriors doubled their lead to 12 by halftime before the Bobcats -- soon to again be the Hornets -- got back in the game in the third quarter. Charlotte got to within two in the third, but they were never able to get over the hump and Golden State pulled away in the final frame.

Brandon Triche and Troy Daniels both had 13 points to lead Charlotte. Deron Washington scored 12 points despite making just one field goal, going 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Bobcats shot just 35.1 percent and turned the ball over 19 times.

NBA free-agency news roundup: Marcus Camby narrows choices to 3, Mavericks making minor moves

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 07:16 PM PDT

20130120_kkt_sv7_234

Veteran big man Marcus Camby is officially a free agent after clearing waivers on Sunday, and he has reportedly narrowed his choices down to the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls, according to Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Camby, 39, was, to his preference, just bought out by the Toronto Raptors after being traded from the New York Knicks in the Andrea Bargnani deal. He played in just 24 games last season due to foot problems, averaging only 1.8 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Camby is expected to make his decision in the next few days. The Heat tried to sign Camby last season, but the Knicks were able to offer more money. Miami could use some more help in the frontcourt despite already re-signing Chris Andersen.

The Bulls are looking for some center depth behind Joakim Noah, as Nazr Mohammed is currently the team's only other player at the position. The Rockets have Dwight Howard and Omer Asik in place at center, but Asik could still possibly be dealt and the Rockets could be sensible with Camby making his home in the Houston area.

Mavs waive Akognon, intend to re-sign James

The Dallas Mavericks were forced to waive Bernard James over the weekend to help fit Monta Ellis' new contract under the salary cap, and they had to do the same thing with Josh Akognon on Sunday.

Akognon led the Mavs' Summer League team in scoring, and Dallas would like to bring him back if he clears waivers.

Speaking of James, he has officially cleared waivers, which leaves him free to go back to the Mavs at the minimum. ESPN's Marc Stein says that Dallas fully intends to bring back the 28-year-old, who would probably see a bigger role than last season.

Kirk Henderson at Mavs Moneyball is pleasantly surprised that James will likely be back:

This was a risky gamble for Dallas because James is a functional big man capable of playing 10-15 minutes a game. He blocks shots, he rebounds, and generally plays hard. There's really not more you can ask out of a minimum salary player. I'm very surprised an under the cap team didn't pick him up.

Oden scheduling more meetings?

Free-agent center Greg Oden may meet with the New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings this week, according to NBA.com's David Aldridge. The Heat, Mavs and San Antonio Spurs have already met with Oden.

The Pelicans reportedly have been mulling an offer for Oden worth about $6 million over two years. The Heat could make a similar offer, but it's unclear whether they are willing to make that type of financial commitment to the oft-injured Oden, who hasn't played a game in the NBA since 2009.

Splitter considered signing elsewhere, but happy in San Antonio

Tiago Splitter admitted that he strongly considered signing an offer sheet elsewhere before re-signing with the San Antonio Spurs for four years and $36 million, according to Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News:

"You feel good that some teams want you, and sometimes you even feel like you'd like to try something new," Splitter said. "You have that doubt behind your ears."

The Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers discussed offer sheets with Splitter, but ultimately, the big man was drawn back to the Spurs because of the level of prosperity the team has had in recent years:

"When you have such a successful team, you've got to keep what's working," Splitter said. "We didn't win a ring last year, but we were very close, and we went the year before to the West finals. You don't want to change it."

Splitter averaged 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in an increased role during 81 games last season.

Honduras vs. Costa Rica, 2013 Gold Cup quarterfinals: Final score 1-0, Catrachos barely hang on

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 06:20 PM PDT

20130721_lbm_aq3_048

Costa Rica had most of the ball and laid siege to the Honduras goal in the dying minutes of their Gold Cup quarterfinal, but the Catrachos were the only ones who were able to make anything of their chances. Some very effective, albeit frantic defending from Honduras in the closing minutes allowed them to make the most of their one goal and hold on for a 1-0 win, advancing Honduras to the Gold Cup semifinals.

The first 30 minutes of the match was slow, as both teams tried to find their footing and struggled to create clear chances. Around the half-hour mark, things picked up considerably. Jorge Claros went close with a shot in the 31st minute and Costa Rica had a shot blocked on the other end just a second later. Honduras turned right around and attacked quickly, with Alexander Lopez forcing a save out of Patrick Pemberton.

Andy Najar was one of the Hondurans' most lively and dangerous players at the end of the first half. Early in the second, his aggressive and persistent runs off the ball paid off with the winning goal. Lopez set it up with a brilliant cross from the right flank and Najar made the perfect run, cutting inside from the left to get his head on the ball and nod past Pemberton, giving Honduras a 1-0 lead.

That goal sparked Costa Rica -- and more specifically, Alvaro Saborio -- to life. Saborio was brilliant from then until the end of the match and came close to scoring on three occasions shortly after Najar's goal. He had a shot blocked in the 56th minute, headed just wide in the 60th minute and had a shot saved two minutes after that.

Costa Rica had all of the possession in the final 30 minutes as Honduras started to play more defensively, only committing men forward on the counter. While the Ticos had all of the possession, they struggled to do much with it between Saborio's dangerous spell and the dying minutes of the match, when they got desperate.

In stoppage time, Costa Rica absolutely laid siege to the Honduras goal, but the Catrachos were able to hold on to their clean sheet. A Costa Rica free kick in the 90th minute was barely cleared away, and that was only the beginning of the eventual losers' late push. Yendrick Ruiz had a header barely saved by Donis Escober in the 93rd minute, with the Honduran keeper fumbling before he recovered on the line. With his team's final effort of the game, Mauricio Castillo ripped a shot wide from 12 yards in the 94th minute as his teammates put their heads on their hands.

Tyrone Crawford injury: Cowboys DE carted off field

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 06:04 PM PDT

20120504_mje_se2_248

Less than an hour into the Dallas Cowboys' first practice of training camp, defensive end Tyrone Crawford was seen being carted off the field with an apparent lower leg injury, according to the team's Twitter account.

Though details of the injury are unknown, initial reports indicate an Achilles issue.

Crawford had a minimal impact last season in his first year out of Boise State, but was expected to be a major contributor to the Cowboys' defense in 2013. A talented and versatile player, Crawford was projected to see time at both end and tackle this season.

It has been a weekend of bad injury news for the Cowboys, who were forced to place both defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and offensive guard Mackenzy Bernadeau on the preseason physically-unable-to-perform list after both suffered hamstring injuries while undergoing conditioning tests on Saturday.

ACC Football Kickoff: Video Player Interviews Including Clemson, Miami, Florida State

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 05:46 PM PDT

201210125_kdl_bb4_180

Sunday brought interviews with many of the top players in the ACC.

The first video features players from Clemson, Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Miami, Wake Forest and Boston College. Included are quarterbacks Tajh Boyd and Stephen Morris. Can Miami break through and play in its first ever ACC Championship? Is Tajh Boys a legitimate Heisman candidate? And how will Boston College do under new coach Steve Addazio? All those questions are asked, and more.

The second video features players from N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Florida State, Maryland and Syracuse. Florida State players are asked why the media should vote for them as the preseason favorite. Pitt and Syracuse players are asked about entering a new league, and the challenges that come along with a new conference. Several teams, including N.C. State and Syracuse have new head coaches, and their players are asked about that as well.

Alex Rodriguez injury: Yankees 3B has Grade 1 quad strain, will head to Tampa

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 05:40 PM PDT

20130703_lbm_ay3_066

Alex Rodriguez was hoping to rejoin the New York Yankees soon, but after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain in his left quad over the weekend, the team announced that the slugger will instead be heading to Tampa to receive treatment.

The Yankees were hopeful the star could return to lineup as early Monday, but he could now be sidelined between seven and 10 days.

Rodriguez was scheduled to play in the final game of his rehab stint with the Yankees' Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre affiliate on Sunday, but skipped the game to instead undergo the MRI.

Rodriguez has been attempting to return to the Yankees lineup after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in January. That comeback hit a speed bump after he complained of soreness in his left quad following a rehab game on Saturday. After consulting with Yankee leadership following the game, it was decided that Rodriguez would instead undergo testing.

The 37-year-old still has four years remaining on his massive 10-year, $275-million deal, which the Yankees are currently trying to rid themselves of. On top of the injury concerns, a potential major suspension looms over Rodriguez for his connection to the Biogenesis PED scandal.

Astros DFA Carlos Pena, Ronny Cedeno, promote Jonathan Villar

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 03:51 PM PDT

20130625_ajl_at5_133

The Houston Astros designated Carlos Pena and Ronny Cedeno for assignment, and recalled Jonathan Villar from Triple-A Oklahoma City, the team announced after their loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Both Pena and Cedeno were disappointed by the move, as Cedeno told Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle that the moved "shocked" him, while Pena described himself as "an Astro til the end." Both players provided Houston with little value offensively in 2013; Pena hit .209/.324/.350 in 325 plate appearances, while Cedeno hit .220/.260/.298 in 155 plate appearances.

Astros manager Bo Porter described the moves to Smith as part of a needed shakeup, while general manager Jeff Luhnow hopes that Villar can provide a similar spark that starting pitcher Jarred Cosart brought to the team.

John Sickels of Minor League Ball rated Villar as the 11th best Astros prospect before the season, and wrote the following scouting report about the shortstop:

Another tools guy like (Domingo) Santana, (Villar) made some incremental progress in Texas League before breaking his hand punching a door. Still plays out of control at times, especially on defense. Would rank higher than Santana on positional scarcity factors, but is a year and a half older.

Villar hit .278/.342/.444 with 31 stolen bases in Triple-A this season. Luhnow confirmed to Smith that Villar will start at shortstop for Houston.

NFL news roundup: No timetable for Ed Reed's Texans debut, Browns sign first-rounder Barkevious Mingo

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 03:23 PM PDT

20130207_mjr_su5_361

Future Hall of Famer Ed Reed will be suiting up in unfamiliar colors this season after ending his legendary 11-year career in Baltimore to sign with the Houston Texans, but it remains to be seen when exactly that might happen. The team still does not have a timetable for the 34-year-old safety's return from a hip injury suffered in last year's playoffs, according to reports.

Reed suffered the injury during the Ravens' AFC Championship victory over the New England Patriots after receiving what was apparently an intentional kick from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, an incident that earned Brady a $10,000 fine.

Here's what else has been going on around the league on Sunday:

Browns sign Mingo

The 2013 Cleveland Browns draft class is officially on the books after the team's first-round pick, Barkevious Mingo, inked his rookie contract on Sunday. The deal is reportedly good for four years, with a team option for a fifth. Mingo, a pass-rushing defensive end/linebacker out of LSU, was chosen with the No. 6 overall pick in April and is expected to serve primarily as a third-down specialist in his first year with the Browns.

Rams' offense to use more hurry-up, spread formations

The St. Louis Rams will be looking to incorporate more hurry-up counts and spread formation sets into their offensive gameplan during 2013, according to an interview with the team's chief operating officer, Kevin Demoff. Demoff recently sat down for an interview with Ramsondemand.com, during which he discussed the scheme adjustments the arrival of new offensive weapons has provided the coaching staff:

Our coaches noticed that we were more effective in the hurry up/spread concepts a year ago and that not only did we make more plays but we were able to dictate the tempo more and neutralize the pass rush. We now have the personnel to match that style on offense with an offense that can have multiple tight ends, empty backfields and different personnel combinations to try and stress the defense and create mismatches.

Ratliff, Bernadeau injured at Cowboys' camp

The Dallas Cowboys opened training camp on Sunday, and already key players are being held out of practice due to injuries. Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and offensive guard Mackenzy Bernadeau suffered hamstring injuries during conditioning tests on Saturday, and have been placed on the preseason physically unable to perform list. The severity of these injuries and a timetable for the pair's return to practice is unknown at this time, though Blogging the Boys points out that the preseason PUP is largely precautionary.
