Jesse Crain injury: White Sox RHP could return Sunday

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Jesse Crain threw a bullpen session Tuesday, and hopes to return to the club Sunday or Monday, the team announced.

Crain threw a 33-pitch bullpen session consisting of fastballs and changeups and felt good afterward, reports Scott Merkin of MLB.com. The reliever is scheduled to throw another side session Thursday.

White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper discussed Crain's rehab, telling Merkin:

"His health is still our foremost thing in our mind to make sure he is well. We want to do it to the point where he's maybe a tad fatigued, making sure you've got that good workout in and feel good before, during and after. Now we're waiting on the after, which is tomorrow."

Crain pitched well out of the Chicago bullpen before suffering a right shoulder strain, as the reliever owns a 0.74 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 36-2/3 innings. His first-half campaign earned Crain a selection to the All-Star team for the first time in his career.

If Crain can return healthy before the July 31 trade deadline, he would give White Sox general manager Rick Hahn a valuable trade chip. The Rockies, Cardinals, Reds, Dodgers and Braves have all reportedly monitored Crain's health.

Larry Sanders injury: Bucks center sprains ankle at Team USA mini-camp

Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders was beginning to hit his stride with Team USA basketball during the Las Vegas mini-camp on Tuesday when he suffered a sprained left ankle, according to Sekou Smith of NBA.com.

The injury occurred when the big man was attempting to contest a shot and landed awkwardly on the foot of Houston Rockets swingman Chandler Parsons.

His head coach, Larry Drew, and Bucks general manager John Hammond were on hand to witness the injury, and they didn't seem overly concerned that he spent most of the afternoon in the trainer's room receiving treatment.

"He just sprained it and it blew up on him a little bit," Drew told NBA.com. "It’s (a) tough pill for him to swallow because you know how bad he wants to be out there. All of these guys do. But it’s just a freak thing that happened."

Sanders was visibly frustrated, as he had to watch from the sidelines with the knowledge that he was losing an opportunity to impress the coaching staff. Players understand that mini-camp is their chance to make an impression and earn valuable minutes that could earn them a spot on the Men's Senior National team.

Other players saw the convincing body of work Sanders was putting together, and it's likely the coaches did too. The injury figures to be just a setback -- he'll likely be called upon again when healthy.

Jake Peavy rumors: Red Sox, Cardinals suitors for White Sox RHP

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

169928609

The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals have emerged as suitors for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Peavy appears to be the top starter available on the trade market after the Texas Rangers acquired Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs. The right-hander recently returned to the White Sox after missing six weeks with a broken rib, and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings against the Atlanta Braves. Overall, Peavy is 7-4 with a 4.19 ERA.

The Red Sox's interest in Peavy is likely dependent on the injury status of Clay Buchholz, according to Heyman. Buchholz recently received good news after seeking a second opinion on his injured neck from Dr. James Andrews, and is scheduled to resume his throwing program. Boston is still interested in Peavy despite the positive report, as Buchholz is still not expected to return soon, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are another team that has had discussions about Peavy, writes Heyman. Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers drafted Peavy when he was with the San Diego Padres organization, and Towers signed Peavy to a contract extension in San Diego.

Aaron Hernandez investigated for 2012 shooting, per report

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 06:45 PM PDT

20130626_ajl_so6_028

Aaron Hernandez is now the primary focus of a case currently in front of a Suffolk County grand jury, according to Maria Cramer of The Boston Globe. Prosecutors are reportedly making the case that the former New England Patriots tight end should be charged in the homicide of two men on a South End street in July of 2012.

The proceedings, as usual, are being conducted behind closed doors, so the exact potential charge against Hernandez or what evidence is present is unknown at this point. Cramer notes that it appears the investigation is "more narrowly focused on Hernandez" based on the fact that it has made it to a grand jury.

The two victims, Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu were shot early on July 16, 2012, when someone in a sport utility vehicle with Rhode Island license plates pulled up next to their car and began firing. A source who spoke to the The Boston Globe said that the case against Hernandez "appears to be strengthening."

Hernandez was recently charged with the June 17 killing of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, and is being held without bail at Bristol County House of Corrections. According to the Globe, law enforcement officials believe Hernandez murdered Lloyd because he suspected Lloyd knew something about the South End double homicide.

Gordon Hayward, Creighton's Doug McDermott among standouts at Team USA minicamp

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 06:44 PM PDT

20130417_ajw_ad8_079

Utah Jazz swingman Gordon Hayward and Creighton senior forward Doug McDermott are impressing the coaching staff at USA Basketball minicamp in Las Vegas.

ESPN's Marc Stein reported that both players' names keep coming up across multiple sources, despite the fact that neither was expected to be a difference-maker. Jeff Goodman, also of ESPN, echoed that sentiment and pointed out that one source said McDermott is displaying an expert shooting touch.

Both players are suited for the international game that places a premium on outside shooting and has much more restrictive post play. Hayward is a player with guard-like skills in a big frame who can create off the dribble and has nice touch from the perimeter.

Similarly, McDermott is a pure shooter who is turning heads with his ability to score against athletes who play at the game's highest level. As a junior at Creighton in 2012-13, he posted averages of 23.2 points and 7.7 rebounds as an AP first-team All-American.

In 72 games with the Jazz, Hayward averaged a career-high 14.1 points to go along with 3.0 assists and 3.1 rebounds per contest. As he continues to develop, he could be an ideal fit for the senior team with his diverse skill set.

NBA free agency rumors roundup: Greg Oden impresses in workout, Gary Neal becomes free agent

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 06:41 PM PDT

20130403_ajl_sx3_258

It's tough to imagine the past few years going any worse for Greg Oden, who has played all of 82 games since going No. 1 overall in the 2007 Draft. After countless injuries and surgeries, the 7-footer is trying to resurrect his career one final time.

As expected, Oden worked out for a handful of teams in Indianapolis Tuesday and looked great, according to one report. It's unclear just how hard he was pushing it during the workout and what kind of basketball drills he was able to successfully do. Marc Spears of Yahoo! reports that Oden will make his decision next week and that he is considering Sacramento, Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans, San Antonio and Dallas. All of these six teams could benefit from adding to their bench, and if Oden proves to finally be healthy, he could be quite the late-July addition.

SB Nation blog Sactown Royalty don't seem too enthused about the idea of Oden in purple and white.

Should the Kings sign Oden, they will add to an already pretty crowded frontcourt, but Oden would be the only 7 footer among the bunch. Whether or not he could play or meaningfully contribute is another question. I personally have my doubts, but I wish Oden the best as he tries to revive his career.

The Heat and Spurs are regarded by most as the two favorites to sign Oden.

Spurs rescind qualifying offer to Gary Neal

Reports earlier in the offseason stated that the Spurs were likely moving on from Neal, and that they expected him to sign elsewhere as a restricted free agent. On Tuesday, San Antonio took the next step, rescinding their $1.1 million qualifying offer, thus making him an unrestricted free agent.

Neal, 28, just wasn't going to see minutes in San Antonio next season. Spurs blog Pounding the Rock took a deeper look at the team's backcourt situation:

After signing Marco Belinelli, the Spurs backcourt is suddenly overcrowded, and Neal looks to be the odd man out. Neal has been a solid contributor for San Antonio since joining the team three years ago, averaging between 9.5 and 9.9 PPG each year. But his 3-point shooting, and his FG% in general, took a big dip in 2012-2013. Even during the playoffs, which included a Game 3 where Neal made six triples, his percentages left something to be desired (39% FG, 35% 3PT).

The Milwaukee Bucks are believed to be one of the frontrunners to sign Neal.

Brandan Wright agrees to two-year deal with Mavericks

Wright, who has bounced around the league since being selected with the eighth overall pick in 2007, became a reliable bench player for the Dallas Mavericks the past two years. On Tuesday, he signed a two-year deal worth $10 million that includes $1.1 million in incentives.

Wright, 25, played well in Dallas last season, setting new career-highs in points (8.1) and rebounds (4.1) while averaging 18 minutes a game. He appeared in 64 games, starting 16 of them. Wright should see an increased role the next two seasons after the team lost Chris Kaman and Elton Brand in free agency. Plus, as Mavs Moneyball detailed, he has shown a lot of promise alongside Dirk Nowitzki.

He's a monster finisher in the paint, he extended his range to 15-19 feet, he's staggeringly efficient from the NBA "dead zone," he finishes in the restricted area as good as LeBron James, Tyson Chandler or Dwight Howard and he's a beast in pick and rolls, freeing up Dirk for spot up looks. He's getting better on the boards, following up teammates misses if he doesn't get the ball in a pick and roll, he's always been a good shot blocker and he's starting to become a good team defender.

Larry Sanders injures ankle during Team USA camp

While participating in a scrimmage with his Team USA teammates, Bucks center Larry Sanders injured his left ankle and was forced to the trainer's table, according to a tweet by C.F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He later had his ankle wrapped and returned with ice wrapped around his leg.

Sanders broke out with Milwaukee last season, averaging 9.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game in his third year as a pro. He will be examined further by team doctors to determine if any structural damage has been done.

Flopping rule could be decided by arbitration

Things between the NBA and NBA Players Association are getting sticky. Here is the latest on the flopping rule and the fines that were set in place by the league last fall.

The National Basketball Player's Association filed an unfair labor practices charge against the league to combat the new anti-flopping fines, but the National Labor Relations Board refused to rule on the complaint. Now, the NBPA is seeking an arbitrator to work between itself and the NBA, according to CBS Sports' Ken Berger.

Billy Hunter, the former director of the NBAPA, is the one leading the charge. He claims it was not fair that the league determined they would fine players after not meeting with them prior to making their decision.

With fines of just $5,000 for first time offenders and $10,000 and $15,000 for repeat offenders, most feel a change needs to be made. David Stern admitted that the current anti-flopping program was not successful in its debut year, and that changes could be coming.
