IndyCar Series championship standings: Scott Dixon surges to second place

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 11:10 PM PDT

A pair of top-10s this weekend, including a runner-up on Sunday afternoon allowed Helio Castroneves to maintain his IndyCar Series championship lead following the two races at Exhibition Place on the streets of Toronto.

But as a result of sweeping both races this weekend, Scott Dixon has become Castroneves' closest pursuer and has surged from fifth in the standings to second and just 29 points out of the lead with only six races remaining.

While Dixon has surged over the past two weekends, defending IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay has lost considerable ground, falling to third and 69 points out of the top spot.

The drop has been aided by crashes over the past three races, dating back to Pocono and continuing with two more accidents this weekend in Toronto. His teammate, Marco Andretti remains in fourth and is 70 points behind Castroneves.

With only a handful of races left, it appears the championship will come down to one of these four contenders, barring a remarkable string of victories by a team outside of the top-four.

The top-10 in the IZOD IndyCar Series standings can be found below.

  1. Helio Castroneves Ldr.
  2. Scott Dixon -29
  3. Ryan Hunter-Reay -69
  4. Marco Andretti -70
  5. Simon Pagenaud -116
  6. Tony Kanaan -118
  7. Dario Franchitti -118
  8. James Hinchcliffe -120
  9. Justin Wilson -129
  10. Will Power -152

Luis Montes hits a rocket that NASA would be jealous of for Mexico goal

Mexico's goal scoring problem could apparently be boiled down to two things:

  1. Not enough Luis Montes.
  2. Not enough rocket-powered shots.
On Sunday, Montes, in just his third appearance for Mexico, packed his foot with gun powder, lit it and unleashed holy hell on a poor soccer ball. Mexico's goal scoring problem? Solved.

Montes' goal proved to be the match-winner as El Tri took down Montinique 3-1 to book their spot in the Gold Cup quarterfinals. Maybe if Montes and his rocket powered foot made his way to Mexico City come World Cup qualifying Mexico might find the net at Estadio Azteca*.

* Gun powder is not allowed on the soccer pitch, but then again, Montes isn't really that good so let's take liberties where we can and celebrate a rocket that NASA would be jealous of.

Jordany Valdespin reportedly had confrontation with Terry Collins, demanded to be placed on DL

New York Mets outfielder Jordany Valdespin had a confrontation with manager Terry Collins on Saturday following a demotion to Triple-A Las Vegas, with Valdespin allegedly calling Collins a "c--ksucker" and demanding to be put on the disabled list, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Valdespin has been a lightning rod for criticism with the Mets, as the 25-year-old caused a stir with some excessive showboating during a home run trot earlier this season. Valdespin has also been photographed wearing Miami Marlins gear, a division rival of New York.

It's unclear at this time what kind of disciplinary action will be taken against Valdespin, but the Mets would not be missing much if they decided to release the outfielder. Valdespin has a hitting line of just .188/.250/.316 with four home runs and 16 RBI this season. He has not recorded a hit since June 22 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

NBA free agency news roundup: Knicks frontrunner for Metta World Peace, Brandon Jennings not happy

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 08:31 PM PDT

20130630_kkt_st3_035

Now that Metta World Peace has cleared through the amnesty waiver process, he's free to sign with whichever team his heart desires. And it's looking like the New York Knicks are his preferred destination, as he's scheduled to meet with team executives in Las Vegas in the next few days, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Knicks are reportedly the "strong frontrunner" for World Peace, with a deal likely being for about $1.6 million. A possible deal could include a second year with a player option.

After World Peace was amnestied by the Lakers last week, he claimed that he had little intention of playing in the NBA next season, mentioning interest in China and arena football. But despite this and some reservations about even playing in New York, he and the Knicks seem like a good fit.

World Peace grew up in New York and went to college at St. John's, so he's very familiar with the area. The Knicks could also use the small forward's prowess on the defensive end against players like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

World Peace has also been linked to the Los Angeles Clippers, and he told Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times on Sunday that he's interested. However, there's currently no meeting set up between the two parties.

Jennings unhappy in Milwaukee

At the outset of free agency, it appeared that Brandon Jennings wanted to return to the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Bucks supposedly wanted him back. But things have changed, and Jennings is "not a happy camper," according to Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times.

The Bucks recently made a strong play for Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague in restricted free agency, offering Teague a four-year offer sheet worth about $32 million. The Hawks matched the offer, retaining Teague and leaving Jennings free to possibly return to Milwaukee either on a multi-year deal or a one-year qualifying offer.

But Jennings might not want to go back considering how hard the Bucks courted Teague, and Woelfel believes a sign-and-trade of the young point guard is "inevitable." SB Nation's Bucks blog Brew Hoop still believes that Jennings will end up back in Milwaukee, but that the situation will be somewhat awkward for all involved.

'Status quo' on Pekovic front

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been working toward an agreement with restricted free-agent center Nikola Pekovic, but negotiations are currently in a "status quo," according to Jerry Zgoda of The Star Tribune.

The Wolves recently offered Pekovic a four-year deal worth about $50 million, but it appears that the center is holding out for a bit more money. However, there aren't really any other teams who can make Pekovic a better offer, so there's not much reason for Minnesota to budge unless the big man seriously threatens to take the one-year qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

NASCAR New Hampshire 2013: Kyle Busch lambasts Ryan Newman

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:52 PM PDT

173364726

Kyle Busch may have finished second in the Camping World RV Sales 300, but that doesn't mean he left New Hampshire Motor Speedway pleased.

When asked about a Lap 226 wreck that knocked out his brother, Kurt Busch, along with Newman, Kyle vehemently defended his older sibling.

"Ryan Newman is the biggest stupid idiot out here,'' Kyle said when interviewed by SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "He's a big ogre and can do whatever he wants because he can probably kick anybody's butt. So no sense getting in a fight with him. Glad he's out of a job.''

Busch was referring to the news that Newman will be losing his ride with Stewart-Haas Racing at the end of the season, which was announced Friday.

Kurt Busch and Newman were jockeying for position with several drivers when Busch's Chevrolet broke loose and slid into Newman's machine. Busch didn't place blame afterward while Newman mentioned a variety of potential culprits.

"We just got whacked by a bunch of guys," he said. "(Kyle Busch) hit me first, (Brad Keselowski) hit me next and then I guess it was Kurt that went underneath three-wide. (Matt Kenseth) came and clipped us and knocked us into the fence and took himself out.

Busch finished 31st, Newman 39th.

NBA Summer League 2013: Dion Waiters shines in ugly Cavaliers win

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:44 PM PDT

20120717_jla_aj4_178

Sunday's Las Vegas Summer League tilt between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies was a tough watch, as both teams really struggled to put the ball in the basket. One of the few bright spots was the play of Cavs second-year guard Dion Waiters, who scored 23 points in a 69-58 victory.

Waiters did much of his damage in the fourth quarter, scoring Cleveland's last 11 points of the game to help secure the win. Waiters finished the game shooting 7-of-17 from the field and just 1-of-4 from three-point land, but he did go 8-of-12 from the free throw line. He also had four rebounds, four assists and four turnovers.

Waiters, the No. 4 draft pick in 2012, is expected to be a big part of Cleveland's offense this upcoming year, so the team has to be pleased with this performance after a 1-of-11 showing on Friday. The 12 trips to the foul line is especially encouraging, as the Cavs would like to see Waiters do more damage at the charity stripe next season. The youngster attempted just 3.5 free throws per game last year.

Waiters still has a lot to work on in terms of shooting efficiency, as evidenced by his 41.2 percent shooting last year and his uneven start to Summer League. However, getting to the line more often can sometimes mitigate those poor shooting nights.

British Open 2013 odds: Tiger Woods the early favorite

Golf's heavy hitters head to Murifield for the 2013 British Open, with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson headlining the field. Woods, currently World No. 1, won the event in 2006 but has posted mixed results since. Mickelson enters the event with the momentum of having won the 2013 Scottish Open, when he posted a narrow playoff victory over Branden Grace.

Woods, who tied for third in the 2012 edition of the event, is the odds-on favorite to win the Open. Recent reports, though, have suggested that he may not be healthy enough to perform to his potential. That would be disappointing for U.S. Open winner Justin Rose, who has said he's looking forward to facing off against Woods.

Below are some of the favorites in the tournament, with odds provided by OddsShark. The complete field can be found here:

  • Tiger Woods 8/1
  • Adam Scott 18/1
  • Justin Rose 18/1
  • Rory McIlroy 18/1
  • Lee Westwood 20/1
