How to watch the Wimbledon 2013 women's semifinals

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT

On Thursday, the semifinals will play out for the women at Wimbledon. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and the rest of the top 10 are out, save for No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska. She made it to the finals last year, but was unable to seal the deal, and now has the best chance to win her first Grand Slam event.

Unfortunately, she's up against Sabine Lisicki, who took out the top-seeded Williams in the Round of 16, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Lisicki is the No. 23 seed, the lowest seed remaining in the tournament, but is still considered the favorite by many due to how well she's played to this point.

The other matchup will be a showdown between No. 15 Marion Bartoli and No. 20 Kirsten Flipkens. The latter doesn't have much experience on this stage but has been playing well, though Bartoli is favored to win it all.

If you're going to watch on television, ESPN is carrying the coverage from Centre Court, where both matchups will be played. Coverage kicks off at 8 a.m. ET and will run through 1 p.m., though it will likely continue if there is a match still going on. The first match will be the Bartoli-Flipkens showdown, followed by Lisicki-Radwanska.

Provided you're not near your television, there's always WatchESPN.com. You'll still need the proper provider to qualify, but it will have full streaming coverage beginning at 7 a.m. There's also the live coverage at Wimbledon's official website. If audio is more your thing, there's the official Wimbledon radio here.

You can find a full schedule here.

Wimbledon 2013: Time, TV schedule, live streaming for Thursday's matches

The men's quarterfinals were plenty exciting on Wednesday, and the winners will take a day off while the women's semifinals play out on Thursday. The high seeds on the women's side have been decimated to this point, with Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and all of the top 10 seeds outside of No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska eliminated.

Then again, that sets up some rather unpredictable matchups in the semfinals. Centre Court will play host to both semifinal matches, starting with No. 15 Marion Bartoli taking on No. 20 Kirsten Flipkens. Following that, No. 23 Sabine Lisicki, who bested the aforementioned Williams, will take on Radwanska, the fourth seed.

This is the first time the semifinals of a Grand Slam event have been without an American or Russian woman since 1998. The final four wasn't expected by any means, but there's no lack of talent here.

Bartoli has yet to drop a set thus far, and is favored against Flipkens, who doesn't have much experience this far into a Grand Slam. Radwanska is looking for her opportunity to shine without Williams, Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka in the fold. She made the finals at Wimbledon in 2012, but fell to Williams. That said, Lisicki is playing incredibly well and many consider her the favorite, despite being the lowest-seeded player remaining.

ESPN will carry television coverage of the semifinals. Their coverage kicks off at 8 a.m. ET on their flagship network and runs through 1 p.m., though it will go over if there are still matches being played. If you're looking to watch online, there's WatchESPN.com if you qualify and Wimbledon's official video page.

The semifinal matchups are listed below, but if you want to see the rest of the divisions, go here.

White Sox place Paul Konerko, Jesse Crain on DL

The Chicago White Sox have placed first baseman Paul Konerko and reliever Jesse Crain on the disabled list, MLB's roster feed reports.

Konerko has been suffering from a back injury that kept him from playing from June 23 until Tuesday, when he went 0-4. The 37-year-old has struggled this season, hitting .249/.314/.368 with seven home runs over 280 plate appearances. He has split time between first base and DH. For the last-place White Sox, Crain is the far bigger loss, however. The 31-year-old veteran has posted an incredible 0.74 ERA over 36 2/3 innings as the White Sox primary setup man, making him an appealing player for teams in need of relief help at the trade deadline this season. A free agent at the end of the season, Crain was likely to be moved. While there is still time for him to return to the mound, this stint on the DL will almost certainly drive his asking price down.

Fans on the South Side will certainly miss Konerko's veteran presence. However, with the White Sox sitting 14 games below .500 and 10.5 games back in the AL Central, the loss of a valuable trade chip like Crain is a much bigger blow for the club.

Clay Buchholz injury: Red Sox RHP 'close' to returning

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 09:18 PM PDT

20130616_kkt_sv7_659

Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz threw from 100 feet on Wednesday and he feels that he is "getting close" to normal in his recovery from the neck strain that landed him on the DL, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.

"It's finally turned a corner actually," Buchholz told Browne. "I feel like I'm finally getting close to feeling pretty much normal now. So the last few days of throwing are encouraging. Like I said, I'm finally able to clear my head a little bit and go about it as just getting back to getting off the mound". According to Browne, Buchholz will have to work up to 120-foot long toss before the team will clear him to throw off the mound. Buchholz was optimistic that he would reach that mark in the next few days. Buchholz has been one the best pitchers in the American League when healthy this season. In 12 starts and 84 1/3 total innings, he has the lowest ERA in the league at 1.71 and a record of 9-0. However, he has been out since June 2 with this neck injury and his replacement, Allen Webster, who is one of Boston's top prospects, has struggled badly in his place. Webster has a 9.50 ERA in two starts in place of the injured Buchholz.

If the Red Sox ace is any judge, it may not be too long before he is back in the rotation again. Buchholz told Browne, "As far as the rehab stuff goes, me personally, if I felt good in the first start, I would ask him [manager John Farrell] just to throw me back in there."

Ole Miss lineman Park Stevens killed in car accident

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 09:08 PM PDT

Ole Miss sophomore offensive lineman Park Stevens was killed in a car accident Wednesday afternoon, according to a report by Michael Bonner at USA Today. Head coach Hugh Freeze issued the following statement:

"Our team is hurting tonight with the loss of Park," Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement Wednesday night. "He was a tremendous young man that was loved by his teammates and coaches, and Rebel Nation will never forget him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Stevens' family, his friends, our team and all those he touched during his life."

Freeze also took to Twitter to lament the loss of Stevens:

Stevens walked on to the Ole Miss squad this spring after a year at East Central Community College, and participated in spring drills with the Rebels. He was a native of Columbus, Miss., and a graduate of New Hope High School.

A spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Patrol told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that the driver of a pickup truck was killed in an accident in Chickasaw County Wednesday after colliding with the rear wheels of a semi truck crossing a four-lane highway.

Quincy Wilson talks recruiting at The Opening

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 08:49 PM PDT

Quincy_wilson_for_article

Fort Lauderdale-based defensive back recruit Quincy Wilson took a moment to discuss his recruitment with SB Nation's Bud Elliott at Nike's The Opening 2013 Wednesday. The man has a proper appreciation for free socks.

Wilson is a consensus four-star defensive back, though opinions on him have been mixed. Rivals gives Wilson four stars and ranks him among the nation's top 150 players. 24/7, on the other hand, sees Wilson as a three-star prospect, and ranks him outside the top 100 players in the state of Florida. He has narrowed his list to 13 programs: Georgia, South Carolina, UCLA, USC, Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, NC State, Florida, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Vanderbilt. Conspicuous in its absence: Miami, where Wilson's father, Chad, played cornerback.

Bud Elliott's opinion of Wilson varies depending on his eventual position:

He excels at press coverage and really bullies receiver at the line of scrimmage, sometimes even driving them back behind the line. But Wilson does not have the same speed or lateral agility as other elite cornerback recruits. And he doesn't look all that natural at cornerback.

Can Wilson stay at cornerback in college? It's possible, and will depend on the style of defense played by the school to which he commits. If he finds a system that can take advantage of his length and power, and minimize how often he is asked to cover downfield, it could work.

It could also be that Wilson continues to grow and add muscle, and that he moves to safety. If that is the case, he profiles as a big safety, but with plus range for his size.

Rashaan Evans names his top five, talks The Opening

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 08:33 PM PDT

20130703_kkt_ad3_305

Linebacker prospect Rashaan Evans talked with SB Nation's Bud Elliott on Wednesday about his experience at The Opening, and revealed his current top five programs. Evans, projected as an outside linebacker, came to The Opening looking to prove himself as a cover linebacker.

The 6'4, 215-pound Evans is a consensus four-star recruit out of Auburn, Ala. The hometown Tigers are among the more than 25 programs that have offered Evans a scholarship, and remain in the hunt. Evans puts Auburn in his temporary top five with Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee, and UCLA. Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Notre Dame, and USC have also made offers to Evans, among others.

Bud Elliott likes Evans' production, after he managed 16 tackles for loss and five sacks as a junior.
