IndyCar officially announces sale of Indy Lights Series to Dan Andersen

After weeks of speculation, IndyCar formally announced that Andersen Promotions has purchased and taken over the assets of the Firestone Indy Lights Series.

The change was announced on Friday at the Honda Grand Prix of Toronto by IndyCar President of Competition and Operations, Derrick Walker and Andersen CEO and owner Dan Andersen.

Now that the move is official, Andersen now has control of, and will promote all three stages of the Mazda Road to Indy. That includes the USF2000 National Championships, the Pro Mazda tour and now the Firestone Indy Lights Series.

"The history of Firestone Indy Lights is so impressive with dozens of drivers graduating to IZOD IndyCar Series careers over the years," Andersen said. "I am honored to be given the opportunity to step in and steer the course for the future."

Andersen has a history of strengthening the ladder system, having relaunched USF2000 in 2010 and purchasing the assets of Star Mazda before the start of the season. Andersen will control all on-track activity while using IndyCar personnel and will become the primary contact for business, marketing and promotional operations.

Under the new leadership, Lights is expected to run up to 12 races a season with 10 as companion events to the IndyCar Series. IndyCar will work with its television partners to maintain broadcast continuity and will continue to support the scholarship funds for all the Road to Indy ladder stages.

"Our model for operating development programs appears to be well-received by teams and drivers, and I am fortunate to have a strong staff in place," Andersen said. "We believe in the Mazda Road to Indy and we are grateful that IndyCar has chosen to continue its support for years to come."

In advance of the 2014 season, Andersen Promotions has debuted a new website for the Firestone Indy Lights Series, which will run alongside the current existing coverage on the main IndyCar website. A new Twitter account @IndyLights has also been launched.

Honda Grand Prix of Toronto: Drivers express concern over standing starts

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 09:20 PM PDT

Dario Franchitti is a four-time IndyCar Series champion and one of the most-experienced drivers in the paddock, but he's admittedly going to be out of his element on Saturday afternoon when the first race of the Honda Indy Toronto doubleheader begins from a standing start.

Franchitti will start the first race from the pole position and doesn't entirely know what to expect when the lights go out. For one, he doesn't think the car is fully equipped for a standing start. but he does find the competitive potential fascinating.

"For most of the people in the field, it's been such a long time since we did standing starts," Franchitti said. "And with this hand clutch and the current system components, it's just going to be a complete unknown tomorrow.

"In some ways it's good -- it mixes things up a little bit but it's going to be better in the front that in the middle of it."

The middle of the standing start is exactly where James Hinchcliffe will find himself at the start of Saturday's race after posting the 14th best qualifying time. And despite his vast experience at standing starts in the Mazda Road to Indy, Hinchcliffe is still concerned at all the things that could possibly go wrong.

"The teams haven't been quite as proactive on testing and practicing for this," Hinchcliffe said. "We've never gone through the procedure of lining-up and going through the lights as a group so there is a serious risk of somebody getting it wrong, which will look pretty silly.

"The other issue doing a standing start on a street circuit is that if somebody does stall, there is nowhere to go. That's got the big potential for issues."

Marco Andretti enters the race third in the championship standings and hopes to be cautious at the start of the race. He believes mistakes will be made during the full course of the race and that the standing start will increase the possibilities that those mistakes will be made once the lights do go out.

"Hopefully there isn't too much carnage," Andretti said. "But there might be with the first standing starts -- I think the fans are going to be in for a good show."

The IndyCar Series has never utilized standing starts before Saturday. The procedure has long been popular in Formula 1 and was used in the Champ Car World Series, but this will be a first for the former Indy Racing League. The complete rules for the procedure can be found here.

NBA Las Vegas Summer League roundup: Cory Joseph's game-winner lifts Spurs

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 09:03 PM PDT

20130611_ter_su8_357

With the Oklahoma City Thunder wrapping up the title in the Orlando Summer League, the NBA now shifts its attention to Las Vegas, where a new crop of young players will attempt to establish a name for themselves. Friday night's slate included three games and a number of first-round picks seeing their first action in an NBA uniform.

Unfortunately, Friday night's action did not include surprise No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Bennett, even as his Cavaliers were taking the floor against the Lakers. Bennett remains sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Clippers find touch from behind the arc

The Atlanta Hawks faced the Los Angeles Clippers in the first game of the night, and it didn't take long to show Lob City has added some range this offseason. The Clippers hit nine three-points, with a pair coming from first-round pick Reggie Bullock, to cruise past the Hawks, 90-83.

Bullock, the No. 25 pick in the 2013 draft, finished the night with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Samardo Samuels added 15 points and nine bounds on 7-of-11 shooting for the Clippers, while DaJuan Summers also helped the winning cause by contributing 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Most of the pre-game attention focused on Hawks rookie point guard Dennis Schröder. This was the first look many Americans have had at the German floor general, who was selected No. 17 overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. While Schröder flashed signs of the court vision that makes him such an intriguing prospect, he struggled shooting the ball, finishing the night with six points and seven assists on 2-of-7 shooting.

Lucas Nogueira, the other Atlanta first-round pick making his debut, added 10 points and eight rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting in the loss.

Zeller, Felix star in Cavaliers win

Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers shot under 40 percent in their Summer League opener, but the Cavs hit enough shots to secure a victory, 70-62.

Cleveland was led by second-year second Tyler Zeller, who contributed 15 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting in the win. Second-round rookie forward Carrick Felix, the No. 33 overall selection in the draft, also had a nice debut, posting 14 points and six rebounds. The more troubling concern for the Cavs might be the struggles of Dion Waiters. The No. 4 pick in the 2012 draft finished the night 1-of-11 from the field for three points.

The Lakers shot just 21-of-66 from the field and 6-of-21 from three-point range. No Los Angeles starter reached double figures in scoring, but the bench did provide a couple noteworthy efforts. Guard Michael Snaer finished 4-of-9 from the field for 12 points, and forward Marcus Landry added a team-high 14 points.

Spurs top Bobcats on Joseph's game-winner

San Antonio guard Cory Joseph hit a game-winning jump shot with four seconds remaining to give the Spurs a 69-68 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Joseph led the way for the Spurs, finishing with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists as San Antonio's starting point guard. Rookie Deshaun Thomas, the No. 58 pick in the 2013 draft, finished with 18 points and four rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting. Nando de Colo chipped in 12 points for San Antonio.

Forward Jeffery Taylor led the Bobcats with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist finished with 12 points and four rebounds on 6-of-12 shooting. Rookie Code Zeller, the No. 4 pick in the 2013 draft, added eight points and four rebounds in his debut. Bismack Biyombo contributed three points and 11 rebounds.

Honduras vs. El Salvador: Final score 1-0, Catrachos win in stoppage time

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 08:59 PM PDT

20130712_ajw_su8_295

Neither Honduras not El Salvador could be called sharp or adventurous on Friday night at SunLife Stadium in Miami, FL, but they were plenty intense and dramatic. As is always the case when these two rivals meet, the match was physical, sometimes dirty and in the end provided one of the great finishes of the tournament as the Catrachos came away with a 1-0 win.

Both sides had chances in the first half, and were relatively dangerous when they stopped hacking away at each other, but they focused more on clattering with one another than they did look to play. Even the best chances came off of deflections or scrums in the box as they usually resulted in hurried, off target shots from 15 yards out.

It looked like Kevin Santamaria had won the match in the 87th minute when he found space from 25 yards and hit an absolute bullet that had Donis Escobar beat, but it hit the post and El Salvador was left wondering if they might have to settle for a draw.

Little did they know, they would have to settle for a loss.

Jorge Claros got a ball just to the right of the goal in the 92nd minute and was completely unmarked. Putting the slew of missed opportunities out of mind, Claros finished clinically, drilling the ball across the keeper to net the match-winner for Honduras and stun their rivals.

With the win, Honduras moves to the top of Group B with six points. Haiti is in second place with three after winning earlier in the day and the Haitians play the Salvadorans on the final day of group play, setting up a huge clash for the final automatic qualifying place in the group. Trinidad and Tobago is also on one point and will play Honduras on Monday.

Gold Cup 2013: Honduras stay top with win, Haiti shock Trinidad and Tobago

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 08:59 PM PDT

20130712_ajw_su8_272

Les Grenadiers are in good position to advance to the quarterfinals after shocking the Soca Warriors.

Haiti was supposed to be a quick out in the 2013 Gold Cup, but a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Friday night at SunLife Stadium in Miami, FL has them on the verge of a spot in the quarterfinals. Maurice proved to be the hero for Les Grenadiers, scoring both goals to stun the Soca Warriors.

With the win, Haiti sit on three points, which is good for second place in Group B. Honduras lead the group and El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago bring up the rear with a point apiece. If the Haitians can manage a draw against El Salvador on the final matchday, they will likely find themselves in the knockout stages for just the third time in their history.

Interestingly, Trinidad and Tobago struggled with the Haitian speed on the wings. The Soca Warriors have long been known for their speed and physicality, but Les Grenadiers proved better in that aspect and the difference in the match.

Maurice put Haiti in front after just 16 minutes when Jan Williams poorly palmed a 20-yard shot down right in front of goal. From there, all Maurice had to do was tap the ball in and Haiti had themselves a lead.

Haiti's speed really paid dividends on their second goal, as did a bit of fortune. Trinidad and Tobago got caught out, allowing Haiti to counterattack in the 53rd minute and when Les Grenadiers got going, the Soca Warriors couldn't stop them. In the blink of an eye, Haiti was putting a cross in from the left and while a sprawling clearance thwarted the first attempt, it ball hit Maurice and went into the net. It wasn't intentional, but it counted all the same and Haiti was 2-0 up.

Densil Theobald had a chance to get Trinidad and Tobago level just after the break, but it wasn't to be. His header his the post, Haiti scored their second not 10 minutes later and the Soca Warriors slumped to defeat at the hands of the jubilant Haitians.

Yasiel Puig injury: Dodgers OF leaves after 4 innings for precautionary reasons

Posted: 12 Jul 2013 08:50 PM PDT

20130711_ajw_am8_072

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig left the team's game against the Colorado Rockies after the completion of the fourth inning. The team announced the outfielder was removed for precautionary reasons related to his left hip.

Puig's exit marks the second consecutive game in which he left early. On Thursday, Puig left the game after the seventh inning with a hip injury.

For more on the Dodgers, head over to True Blue LA

On Friday, Puig did not attempt to run out a routine ground ball in the bottom of the third inning. He took his spot in right field in the top of the fourth but wasn't involved in any plays. It is unclear whether or not Puig re-injured his hip at some point during the game. He was replaced in right field by Scott Van Slyke.

Puig went 0-for-2 with a pair of ground outs in two plate appearances on Friday, lowering his season batting line to .392/.424/.622. He is 10-for-39 at the plate since a hard collision with the right field wall in a game against the Rockies at Coors Field on July 3.
